tighten torsion bars...

hey im not really familiar with suspension, but i would like an inch or 2 more so my 31's will not be so tight with the fender. I heard tightening the torsion bar will give me what i want, but there must be some reason its set at what it is. So, what are the consequences of doing this and how much will it cost?

Cost: Free
Consequences: If you go too much, theres the possibility of prematurely worn parts, ball joints suffering the most. I've had mine cranked for that last 80,000 miles, and the drivers side ball joint just started sqeaking...

HaHa... I never looked. I assumed since he asked, he had them (on a later model truck, of course). Never even seen the '93'...

So if you tighten the torsion bars you can get some lift out of the front end? I have a 97 F250 LD, and was looking to fit 33inch tires on it. Would this help clear those tires?

Well if your truck is a 4x2, you dont have torsion bars, you have coil springs, and in that case youll need to use a spacer to get some lift
If you do have the 4x4, yes, you can crank the torsion bars, but 33"s should fit even without cranking, depending on how wide and what wheels you are using.

When and if you ajdust the torsion bars, you will need to have the truck aligned. Just remember that an alignment is alot cheeper than 4 new tires.

Thanks guys. My truck is a 4x4. Of course I have the year..97... that Ford decided to put 7 lugs on the axles, so my wheel choice is very limited. If i use stock rims, which are 16x7, the 33's should fit right?
My other choice is to go to a 17" wheel, which gives me a little more choice of rim, but they are expensive.

You shouldn't have any fitment problems with 33" tires on stock suspension. I've got 33's on my 98 1/2 ton 4x4 and have never had any issues.

Yes 33"s will fit fine, you could put a 305/70R16 on there with some minor trimming of the valence.
