Question Monroe Reflex vs. Edelbrock IAS

Has anyone done any research comparing these shocks? Are the Edelbrock shocks made by Monroe?

I thought that there were only a few shock absorber manufacturers, and the different companies put their name on them.

I can't comment on the IAS shocks, but I have been pretty happy with the reflex shocks I put on my rig last fall. The short story is, they are supposed to incorporate similar technology to the Edelbrocks to produce similar results. Of course, for a much lower price. I did all four on my truck for about $130. Install was straight forward - only difficulty was one of the mounting studs on the old shocks broke, but that just meant I didn't have to thread the nut all the way off. Gotta love all the winter salt...

I can't tell you who makes the edelbrocks. I can tell you that Monroe also makes the Rancho RSX shocks - again similar to the IAS shocks. They were released first as the RSX's, as I recall, because the shocks went to a slightly smaller market so they could be fine tuned a little before full release as the Reflex shocks. There are also some other minor differences I can't remember now.

Good luck.

Edelbrock makes their own shocks at their Torrance, California shock manufacturing plant.

Monroe Reflex $35
Rancho RSX $50
Edelbrock IAS $70

I checked out all three web sites, the Monroe site didn't give very much info. I'm leaning toward the Rancho RSX for the most bang for the buck (twin tube, silca bushings, similar inertia valve).

Does anyone have the Rancho RSX shocks on their truck?

edelbrock makes thier own shocks.

very impressive bumpy road handling.. My truck no longer "bangs" over the holes. Kinda acts like a basketball would when dribblin.
Also, I can really cut it hard around turns and my truck does not lean at all anymore.

a little on the firm side, but a nice ride

Hey, where are you guys finding the Monroe Reflex shocks for $35? I went to 3 parts stores around here and got quotes in the $45 to $50 range.

[/QUOTE]

I'm sorry, I was using gopher's price as a guesstimate. I haven't priced the Monroe shocks myself. I found the other shock prices on different web sites.

I may suffer with the worn out factory shocks for another month, I tried to trade for an '01 this afternoon. I'll see if they will come down to my price by the end of the month.

I bought mine down at my nearby Checker Auto Parts store back in August / September of last year. Haven't checked prices since. Maybe I got a promotional price. I dunno. Just telling ya what they were! Good Luck!

Thanks for the info Matt, I book marked this web site for future reference.

Is anyone familiar with Gabrial VST shocks? I think Midas calls them Gold Runner.

I missed the "buy 3 get the 4th free" on the Monroe Reflex by 2 days, it ended May 15th. This offer would explain gopher's $130 price for 4 shocks. O'Reilly's had them for $40 each, this is $10 less than NAPA. Midas wants over $400 installed for the Reflex.

I found 4 Rancho RSX for $160 at O'Reilly's, but they have to special order them. When they looked up the Monroe Reflex, the Rancho number also came up.

The Edelbrock sound like the best shock, but I hate to spend $300 on a truck that I might trade soon.

$400 for four shocks installed! Holy cripes! Are they nuts? For that price - just get the edelbrocks!

I couldn't justify the extra cost for them - thus the reflex shocks. I'm happy, and I guess thats all that counts.

FYI - mine were also a special order. It only took two days, so not that big of a deal.

Good luck!

Cool

I have personally never had good luck in terms of longetivity with Monroe products, typically I get about 3 years befor they act like mush compared to when they were new. Although they replace them without question. IMHO, Edelbrock is highly overpriced for what they are giving you. Yes they perform well, but for that amount of money or less, you can easily purchase Bilsteins or Koni's. I have found Bilsteins priced at around $60 each at eshocks.com.

Thanks for the links Matt90GT. Some pretty interesting stuff over on that side - obviously a hardcore off roader!

Well, if the longetivity is measured in years, in another 2.5 years, (shocks will be about three years old then), I should be at about 200,000 miles, and I would expect to be due for a new pair. If they wear out on the miles, well that'll be another story! Later...

Opie,Just finished doing the shock thing. First went with the Monroe Reflex. After 23 days of around town driving, one front and one rear started to leak oil.Ordered Bilsteins from Offroad Wharehouse in California, $59ea.+ s/h. The ride is awsome. Going to beach this weekend to check off-road ride. Will post results. Have a happy and safe holiday. Mark
