Question 5W-20 Motor Oil??

We just purchased our SuperCrew about 2 weeks ago. While reading the owners manual I notice it calls for 5W-20 motor oil. Not only have I never used 5W-20, I have never seen it for sale anywhere. What do you all use when changing oil. Thanks

I'm sure, the manual says 5W-20, I thought it may be a misprint in the book, but it says 5W-20 on the Oil Filler cap in the engine compartment as well.

Better check with your dealer, this doesn't seem right. Ford has TSBs out for ALL gasoline engines to use 5-30.

Are you sure it said "5-20"? Should be 5-30, better check again.

Question

Strange, my manual says 5W-30 for my 5.4.
Have not checked the cap, though.

Just talked to local Ford service dept and Ford is now recommending 5W-20 for 2001 OHC engines. They found out just last week.

I agree with eswartz. Just picked up our SuperCrew last week and on the oil filler cap it says "USE 5W-20 ONLY" as it says in the Owner's Manual.

It has to be a misprint in your manual. 5W-20 would be a very thin motor oil. If you were running at 70-80 MPH with an oil that thin you stand to spin a bearing or worse. the thinner the oil is the faster it will leave the part(bearing, piston, camshaft, ect...) and go back to the oil pan. Not to mention the pump will have a hard time picking the oil up. I agree with everyone here use 5W-30.

Georgecrew is right= Ford just issued oasis
ser. msg. saying 5-20 is recomended for most
2001 engines. my 2001 (June bld. date) says
5-30. I think i'll stick with that. I had a
customer with a 2001 Mustang ask me about that a few weeks ago, and I too said I'd never heard of 5-20, but's it's now out in
Motorcraft oil(probably can't get it anywhere
else unless GM is doing the same thing).

I guess a call to your dealership's service dept. is the best way to find out. If you are having your vehicle serviced there they should be going by whatever the manufaturer calls for in order to protect warranty. Just a thought!

5w20? 5w30? My dealer just changed the oil in my 5.4 and they use 10w30 Valvoline Duralube. They didn't even use a Motorcraft filter, used a Valvoline filter which I beefed about. They then changed oil and filter again to Motorcraft filter....

Question

News does not seem to have reached some of the Ford Dealers yet. I spoke to my dealer yesterday and their service department had not heard of the Ford directive. They did say that Ford has said to use 5W-20 in the Escape, but had not heard anything about the V-8s.

Seems sad when we have to tell Ford Dealers what Ford is directing them to do.

Question

What would you suggest for Arizona, where theoutside temp can reach 115-118 degrees for days at a time. and running down the road over blacktop that is probably 160-180 degrees, I'd think 5-20 would do about as good as mineral water in the crankcase.

In my GM products, ALWAYS straight 30W with Moreys Oil Aditive.

I changed the oil in my S-Crew last weekend, and both the manual and cap say to use 5W-30. Mine was built in 7/00.
