<12K Svc Eng. Soon light on S-Crew

Anyone else had this problem? Read on-

Driving along on Northbound LBJ/635 the other day, my Service Engine soon light came on. I've been driving F-150's & Expy's since 1999, and I've never seen that light come on. This was in my 2001 S-Crew, with 10, 339 miles on the odometer. May 28th, it'll be a year old.

Anyhoo, I remembered some friends & family with Pontiac's in particular (Bonneville & Gran Prix) that told me, when that light came on, they didn't make it a block before the car died. So, naturally, I was worried sitting in traffic on LBJ. So at my next opportunity I jumped off of 635 (Traffic jam) and took Plano Rd. to Campbell & over to North Central Ford in Richardson, TX. (Formerly Baillargeon Ford)

This was Saturday, and surprisingly enough, they could help me (Most service departments only do oil changes on Saturday.) I dropped it off at 10:40, at 2:10PM, they'd finished me up. They called me, we went & got it, and the Service MGR told me the RFO (That's telecom for Reason for Outage) was due to: "A failed dual-feedback sensor to the EGR valve". I asked him to explain, and he told me any number of things could have caused this sensor to fail. Excess carbon build-up, bad-gas, etc... My gas cap was on tight, I knew what that could do. He replaced it, and it's running like a champ. It never ran differently when the light came on though, but remembering the problems my friends have had, seeing that light come one gave me a moment of pause.

I guess I better start putting in a national brand (Exxon, Texaco, etc.) instead of the cheapest I can find. But, cheap gas has done me well in my 00 Expedition & 99 S-Cab.

Anyone else had this problem?

Also, has anyone noticed that their 4.6L 2001 S-Crew requires 5:20 oil, not 5:30 or 10:30? I'd never heard of 5:20 and just assumed I was getting 5:30 all along.

5-20 oil is what Ford is requiring in almost all of it's engines now. It gets a little bit better gas mileage and the thinner oil will coat the parts quicker. The overhead cam and the tight tolerances calls for an oil that can circulate quicker, ie a thinner oil. So go out and get some of that 5-20. If you can't find it then the 5-30 will still work fine, just best to use the 5-20 though.

As far as gas goes, I only use Cheveron, but I have a chip so I use the 91, and in California Cheveron is said to have the most energy content of the other gases. Arco is crap, so you get what you pay for there.

I had the same problem w/ my '01 Screw. Not the gas or cap in my case either just a bad sensor for some reason. Truck never ran any differently with the light on or after it was fixed. Light came on again just recently for a different sensor. Again, no problem running just needed new sensor. All under warranty.

pgh_medic No need to change-

I had a 1999 S-Cab & I have a 2000 Expy, both 4.6L's, both required 5w:30. (The 1999 wanted 10:30 in the summer, 5:30 winter, per owner's manual)

Only on the 2001 S-Crew have I seen it request 5:20 for the 4.6.

I had the exact same problem on my 01 Screw with only about 5k miles. Tech at dealer stated gas cap had a leak and replaced gas cap. No problem since then.
