Considering an '03 Crew w/100k, FX4, common probs?

What are the most common probs on the SuperCrew FX4's w/5.4 and auto?

I am considering buying one with 100k miles. The truck appears to have been driven rather gently, but I am not familiar with Ford's newer stuff - just their old 5.0 and 5.8 pushrod motors.

Anything in particular I should look at? I know they have spark plug/coil issues, but what else?

Thanks,
Shawn

At that milage you're looking at a complete tune-up and maintenance. New plugs, filters, and fluids all around. Maybe new brake pads, too.

Other than that, you should be good to another 100K.

Enjoy.

2003 Screw, a fine year. Really not much to worry about. Cylinder heads were changed so no spark plug issues. Check for oil on the engine around the valve covers is about it other than normal wear and tear. It is the alst year before the redesign, so all the bugs were worked out. There was minor decontenting, but if you never had those features from say a 1999 year, no worries.

Thanks for the info guys.

My uncle is a front end tech at a local Ford Dealer, so parts/service should come cheap. However, he doesn't always see all of the common mechanical problems if they aren't suspension related, so I thought I'd ask.

Any issues with the 4x4 system on these? They are IFS, correct? Electronic Shift have any trouble?

Thanks,
Shawn

Front end wear is probably the biggest problem. The ball joints, tie rod ends and idler arm are all high wear items on our trucks. If they have not been replaced yet, they will have to be shortly. My ball joints and idler arm were replaced at 60k miles and my truck is babied.

This is the truth right here. I had a lower ball joint worn out at only 35,000 miles. I discovered it when I had my mudders put on and went for an alignment. I figured if that one was shot, the others weren't too far behind, so I replaced them all.

only problem i had on mine at 104k miles was the front bearing/hub assymblies went out. it was just under $600 for new ones when i did the labor myself. they arent hard to swap out though. looking at all these replies, it seems everyone has all just had minor front end problems. but hey, at 100K+ you have to expect it. other than that, my truck has ran like a champ and i beat the hell out of it every mile i drive it. other than the usual maintenence, it doesnt give me a bit of trouble.

also, i have trouble keeping my CV shafts in one piece, but thats mostly due to the tires and wheels mixed with the fabtech lift putting them at a crazy ass angle. i wouldnt worry about the 4x4 at all if its sitting stock though.
