Question Whining Noise from '02 Supercrew

I have a 2002 Supercrew with about 57,000 miles on it. Recently, I have been hearing a high pitched whine come from somewhere underneath the truck. When it first started, it would only happen infrequently, and the whine would only last a few seconds. Today, it started out almost as soon as I got going, and would come and go, this time lasting up to 15-20 seconds at a time. The truck seems to drive fine other than the whining noise, the tranny appears to be shifting fine. The whine will usually end if I let up off the gas pedal. Today, I even put the truck in 4X4L and drove it around for a short time to see if the whine was present. I hardly heard it then, but it was there once or twice, though not nearly as bad as when it was in two wheel drive.

Any ideas on this one? Am I looking at needing to take out a second mortgage for repairs on the truck? Thanks in advance for any help..

Take a look in the "Other Powertrain" section and you can search for "rear end whine" and find a lot of threads about this common problem.

I'm in the same boat and actually have a thread up there right now.

Sounds pretty normal to me. If it's the rear end. Mine has done that pretty much since it was new. usually around 45 mph, if i let off of the gas it goes away.

My 02 SuperCrew does the samething since I got it new. Always whines a liitle bit right around 50 mph and stops as soon as I let of the gas.

That's the harmonics you hear from the Ring and Pinion gears in the rear axle due to backlash of a normal .005" -.007" clearance.

Mine did the same thing .. would wine at start and go away .. then got worse .. would wine at start and while driving .. when i would hit about 3rd gear it would go away and it was fine until the truck would sit and get cold then it would happen allover again... my dad has been working with Fords for 22 years and is currently the service manager for a dealer... he told me to change the tranny fluid and filter .. i did this and it went right away... the magnet was full of clutch errosion as was the bottom pan.. cleaned them all up and i have not had any kind of wine .... hope it helps... also i have acess to the IDS sys. so if i can help anyone with anything let me know..

I got the same problem once the wife and kids hop in, but when I'm by myself I don't hear a thing.

I'd check all the powertrain fluids

There is a problem with rear end that Ford will only fix if you bring it up. specially if it is under warranty

Noise

My co-worker again, we changed his rear end alxe bearings. Took six hours and around $150 in parts, labor was free.
All that work and the noise did not go away.
He ended up changing pinion gears and noise went away. paid around $300 to fix
He owns a 2002 screw, mine is a 2001 screw.

My 01 has had a slight whine coming from the rear diff since I've had it. approx 100,000kms. Its never giving me a problem at all. I flushed the fluid in the rear diff and thats it. Its a common occurence in these trucks.
