Slim Subs

I have seen these new "slim subs" that all the companies are coming out with. So are theses subs worth my time and money?

Until the BMs come out, no. None of the shallows are that great except for the JL TW5....which is stupidly overpriced as usual.

x2 on that... I heard they overheat quickly... as for being overpriced, I would rather get another 15...

I like my shallow JL Audio 10W1v2-4's. They hit clean but I don't think they are good for someone who wants to bump hard.

So I take it you've heard everyone that is out there , in a vehicle and in the correct enclosure ? I love my Rockford P3's . I won't comment on any others because I have not heard them .

Those aren't shallow subs. They are a standard driver which, by virtue of its small magnet and minimal excursion, is able to have a relatively shallow mounting depth. The result is what you've noticed - really low output.

IMO, the Pioneers are the worst of the current shallow mounts. Over-hyped for no reason, terrible SQ, insufficient excursion, and terrible low end. Not to mention (again IMO) they have one of the ugliest cones I've ever seen.

46 oz motor + low sensitivity and the traditional small excursion of shallow subs = not much ability to get loud.

I've only heard one in a store in a spec Rockford ported box, and it was far better than other shallows but it still wasn't that good even compared to a standard P3.

OP - Shallows are a compromise. Don't make it if you don't have to.

I'm pretty set on getting 10"s or 12"s. Looking at some Pioneers b/c from what I've read they are good and well priced. But still looking for some that wont drain the bank. I've seen some boxes for my '99 but positive I can make a better box, and since I'm making it might as well go with full sized subs. Any recommendations?

Don't do Pioneer. Good decks and they have that one set of comps that's great, but other than that IMO not a great product line.

Sundown E8s if you like SQ.
Single DD 1508 ported on 600-1K would absolutely blow your conceptions of size->output away.
RE shallows might be out now. Those look quite promising, but again it is still a shallow, and, like, really expensive.
AQ SD2 8s sound good with pretty decent output.

ID makes some good 10-12s that will fit in your application. Fullsize SI Mag v4 if you absolutely need SQ.

Yes, i have heard a P3, the Pioneer Premier shallows, and a few others. The pioneer is terrible, my friend has one.

Keep in mind, not everyone has room for 4 12s.

You want a quality shallow? Aliante. But good luck finding one.

That's probably because you're talking about L5s...
