No more component, going back to coaxial!
Hey all -
Right now I have a set of component Eclipse speakers in the front doors of my '06 SCREW. I have an amp hooked up to these, but no sub. It sounds like complete dog crap. I've messed with every setting possilbe and it still blows.
Question: Since these have a cross-over, can I just replace the component speakers with coaxial speakers and be done with it? Or do I need to disconnect the crossover and re-run the wires?
I have some speak's in my garage and really don't have the cash to buy another amp and a sub. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I would suggest maybe having a professional/somebody more experienced check it over and tune it. I don't know your history so correct me if I'm wrong here, but for me it made such a big difference. Once I was finished completely wiring and installing my whole system I gave it a general baseline setup based on my limited knowledge (I'm 16 y.o.) and it was decent, but I decided to take it to a shop and let a professional tune it - night and day difference, everything was significantly better. It only cost me $30 and they spent about 45 minutes on it tuning it by ear and with a meter.
Just a suggestion before you start spending money on new stuff (especially "downgrading" by switching to coaxils). If the problem lies somewhere else like your amp, you'll be pissing your money away. It's easy to overlook things, we all do it and sometimes all it takes is someone who does it every day to spot an issue. Are you trying to get too much bass out of them since you don't have a sub?

That's probably not a bad idea to have one more shop give the look-over. Right now I have the fader on the rear speakers at -6, with 0 being even. If I center the fader you could break glass it's so high pitched. I messed with the hi-lo filter last night and that didn't make a bit of difference.

When you say it sounds like crap, what do you mean? Are your highs harsh? Is midbass lacking? Are you experiencing distortion? Cone break-up with the woofer? muddy midrange?
Also, what is your source unit? (head unit) and what kind of source? (CD, ipod, mp3 etc)
Elaborate, maybe we can help you.

Cool, let me try to explain. Right now, the only way I can tolerate listening to the stereo is to have the fader nearly all to the back, around -6 to -8 (out of 10). If I move the fader any more toward the front, the highs are frickin' high and it's nearly un-listenable. There's essentially no bass at all. The rear speakers are giving me whatever bass I can get. I'm not really sure what mid-bass means, sorry.
The source unit is a Sony CDX-GT510. The Ipod and CD sound decent, at best, but it's the Sirius satellite that sounds the worst. I messed with the Hi / Lo ***** on the amp last night and of course I made it worse. I was turning the two screws and didn't notice any difference at the time (wrong!), but driving to work today I could really tell. I have the rear-out setting on the HU (stock is subout) and that really didn't make a difference.
The speakers and amp came with the truck, although the previous owner used the amp to power a sub and not the front components. I had a stereo shop hook the amp to the components so who knows. I'm out of options. Thanks!!

Sounds like you cranked the gain and the HPF.

What's the gain? I'm guessing I should turn the HPF all the down?

Yeah by that question you need to take it to a shop before you hurt something.
