Post Subwoofers: 2-ohm vs. 4-ohm and downfire vs. upfire

I have the SuperCab F-150, which doesn't have much room for subwoofer(s) under the seat. I'm pretty sure I want to go with a single 10" subwoofer. Probably a Boston Acoustics or MB Quart. What I would like, are your opinions on:

1. 2-ohm or 4-ohm?

2. Downfire vs. upfire - which sounds better?

Thanks,
Mike (aka python1340)

Take another look around, Python. You've got more options than you think. JLAudio makes a stealthbox specifically for F150 underseat installation. They fire into your floor. I have a SCrew with a stealthbox in my center console (Single 10) powered by an RF250a mounted behind my rear seat. I don't lack for clean, hard bottom end!! Check this out:
http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthboxes/index.html
Also go into the search option in this forum and do a bit of looking. Several guys have made their own designs under the seat using popular and excellent woofers, such as Kicker, MTX and others. B/A and MBQuart make great speakers, but they aren't primarily known for subs.
You might also check the "Car Audio Forum" section at this site:
http://clubknowledge.com/forums/Car_...eractive_Help/
Several install pros answer questions about just about everything, and anyone can post.
Trust answers from Mr. B, Swez, Tray (There are others, but they stand out).
Don't be in a hurry to decide, and have fun.

The JL Audio page says that it will not fit the SC with extended box? Do you have a Gen I, II, or III, SuperCrew. Can you still use the factory 6 disc player with the stealthbox. Any increase in road noise with that small patch of carpeting gone?

Hey, I like the down-fire design. I think it sounds much better than up-fire or forward-fire.

Dual voice-coil withh give you more bang for the buck, especially for a high-exscursion woofer.

I've had the MTX Thunderform, and I've heard the JL Audio Stealth box. Both use dual 8" woofers, whic I think sound better than a single 10" woofer. I have two 10" woofers under my rear seat in a SUBBOX.net box, and I am very happy with it.

Best: two 10" woofers
Better: two 8" woofers
Good: One 10" woofer

Thumbs up

I'm not sure where you're getting your info, Alwysl8. I believe i have a GenII. If you have the center console, it'll fit. You sacrifice the changer. IMHO, no loss there. I always thought it was a POS. The stealthbox is built well and entirely replaces the plastic box insert inside your console shell. That shell is also raised off the floor about 3/4-in. When I open my console lid now, I have a nicely carpeted (dark charcoal) depression about 2-in deep.....enough for maps, shades, change and a small CD carrier. I really don't miss the Changer. I installed Kicker Impulse 6.5 rounds in the rear doors and Diamond Audio M551 (5.25 Round) Separates in the front. Besides the RFoz powering the woof, I have a Kicker amp powering the front stage. It's also mounted behind the plastic panel behind my rear seats (I get to the amps thru the little access door that Ford built into the body panel). My head unit is a Blaupunkt "Munchen". Nice unit. Lots of power. But the display really sucks big time (gets washed out COMPLETELY in the day). As you can imagine, I'm extremely satisfied with the sound I now have. I dynamatted the speakers and rear wall behind carpet. I also bought some spray-on sound dampener from Parts Express.com to use on/inside all four doors. (I forget the brand; It's the blue stuff)
I have not noticed any increase in noise with that little carpet patch gone. While I won't be entering any SPL competitions (nor would I want to) I have PLENTY of bottom end; enough to drown out the inconsiderate and immature dorks who think they're really cool with their windows down "slamming" at the stop lights.
If you were to look inside my cab, aside from the tweeters in the front door panels and new HU, you'd think my SC is entirely stock. But crank up Stevie Ray, and you'll get a BIG surprise. Hope this helps you.

AI Research has a nice enclosure that will fit a 10" sub under a 2000 F-150's back seat at: http://www.airesearch.com/newproducts.html

The thing is way overpriced at $259.00 though. Perhaps if it included a sub. :-)

python, you think those Q boxes are expensive, price out on of those JL sealth boxes..$$$
I see you have a S/C, what year? If its a 00 and up you can build a box on the passenger side and put in a 10" JL sub and the seat will still drop down and lock. That's if you can build it or have some one that can, and not rip you off. I have a enclosed 10" in my truck, you need measurements, give me a holler.

Yeah, I've got a 2000. I'd like the measurements if you have them handy. I'm not sure what I'm going to do - buy or build. But I'm definitely going for a single 10" under the passenger side of the rear seat.

Question

dogcam,

If you could shoot me those measurements and what type of material you used, I would be eternally grateful. I'm looking to put a 10" sub under my seat once I save up the money.

A couple questions:
1) Does your seat still fold up when the box is under it?
2) Is the sub firing up or down?
3) How does it sound?
