subwoofer ohm load
I'm putting a stereo system in my truck and I'm not sure which sub to use. I'm going to use a JL Audio but I'm confused on the different ohm rating on the same speaker. What is the difference? Do I need to get one with a different ohm rating if I'm going to use two subs? Thanks Jeff

Everything depends on the combination of amplifier and sub/subs. Any given amplifier will work at its best and safest into a particular "load". There are many ways to go, but in any case, the combination must be planned carefully. The incorrect set-up can ruin an amplifier and/or speakers. Also, the wattage ratings have to be considered. First, decide what you want from your system and go from there.

This is what I have so far Dynamat Extreme for the entire cab,
pioneer deh p760 head unit, jl audio xr650 csi speakers for the doods, polk ex572 speakers for the back, pheonix gold r9.0:5 5 channel amp. The amp puts out 4 x 125 @ 4 ohms and 1 x 400 @ 2 ohms. My plan is to get a subwoofer box custom made to fit behind the seat like a proboxrocks for 2 10" subwoofers. This is where my question comes into play. When I look on the jl audio web site I see that their subs come in 2,4 or 6 ohm ratings. My speakers for the doors and the back are all 4 ohm so I should be ok but my amp will put out 400 watts x 1 @ 2 ohms or 250 watts x 1 @ 4 ohms. That is what I'm not sure about. Jeff

If the amp is "safe" into 2 ohms, then you would want to use two 4 ohm subs and wire them in parallel to the amp. Or if the subs are DVC they will need to be dual 2 ohm wired in series/parallel. This will let you get the most from the amp. And since it's a PG amp, you will be fine. Shouldn't have any problems. JLAudio has a tutorial on their site that shows exactly how to wire everything.
