As you may or may not know, we have been testing alternate message boards to the current version of the software we are using. Performance problems have been popping up with Netscape 4.x users. Please check out http://128.242.213.88/ if you are a Netscape 4.x user and let me know what you think. You represent a small percentage of users on this site, but I do not want to alienate anyone by switching to another product.
If the results are positive, I would like to open up the forums above to a public "beta" test to see how our server performs with this particular software...
Steve.
I have Netscape 4.76, I went to the alternate site and clicked around a bit. I didn't notice anything that could be called a browser related problem.
ps: I absolutely HATE Internet Explorer and all that it stands for.

I suppose it could become an issue for people with dial-up connections. I visit this site from work (T1 line) and noticed that the test site is a bit slower than this one, if I had to quantify it I'd say about 20% to 30%.
Is it safe to assume that not ALL of the links on the test site are working yet?

Steve, I used both IE and Netscape 4.72. It appeared that the loading was much slower on my dial up with Netscape and I believe this could be an issue. I for one can't yet afford the DSL or cable hookups, I use 9.95 dial up at 56k max.
Here is my concern...even with my DSL connection, page loading with Netscape 4.x is abysmally (sp?) slow. This is more of a function of Netscape, rather than my connection to the 'net. Internet Explorer is just fine. I don't want to switch over to another BBS system and suddenly have all of the Netscape 4.x user (about 12% of total) complain and/or leave.
Steve;
Tried it and it wasn't to bad I guess. I use Netscape 4.7. It might have been just a little slower but not to slow. I use a dial-up connection 56K and it performed fairly well. But thats not to say once we get alot of people on at one time things would change. I like the new look, just going to take awhile to get use to all the different features. Hope you can get things taken care of.

Steve~
I use both Netscape 4.7 and IE 5.0 and have cable connection. I timed each browser multiple times with my watch. I do notice that Netscape is much slower. It takes about 13-14 seconds to load fully. IE only takes 3 seconds.
I didn't come across this thread originally because I mainly lurk around for the actual Lightning related stuff. The low number of responses to this make it appear that there were many others who are the same.
Now
It appears that I will be forced to use IE at work and reload it at home.
Netscape has responded VERY badly to this new format and 6.0 doesn't appear to be available for my PCs.
More power to Microsoft...
Steve;
Just wanted to update you on the compatibility of Netscape to your upgrade. As you read in my last post when I tried your new system I didn't experience to much trouble mabe a little slower but not much, but in the real world it seems to be hurting us with it's draw backs! I like the new look but for us Netscape users it seems to be slowing us down alot {in the real world}. It's taken me about 10 to 15 seconds to load up a page, but with the old setup it only had taken about 5 or so seconds max to load a page! Don't know if you can fix it or not but if there is a way I would appreciate it, so would the other users that use Netscape. Thank you for your time.
