Lightbulb Check this out... Beware! This is a little gruesome...

Man, this is what I was talking about when a deer jumps! A front guard ain't gonna help ya when they jump like this, but case in point about the amount of damage a deer can cause!

A friend of mine sent this to me... Care to guess what the dude was saying as this happened! I wonder if he had to use a tag on this??? LOL

Sorry if I grossed anyone out here...

The driver was very lucky...

Many stories here in Minnesota of deer jumping thru windshields and killing the driver. A few years ago near my house a guy heading to the casino was killed by a deer hit by another car, after the deer went airborn and thru the second car's windshield.

Deer are so smart about adapting to just about everything we humans throw at them, but they are so stupid about vehicles.

That is a lucky guy. 18 inches left and the pics would have been gruesome.

I was walking in the woods and came upon a White Tail. He was standing beside a six foot fence. Without taking a step the dear leap over the fence and didn't touch it. I was amazed at how these animals can jump.

Raoul...

I have also seen them jump SIDEWAYS thru strands of barbed wire or sheep fencing. Trying to keep a low profile, I suppose.

Dammmm, we don't have this problem in San Diego often but do have some deer around. I have never seen anything like this so thanks for the post. My horizons have been expanded.

Now if you had about a 6 inch lift, 35s and a big brush guard it may help? Or just drive around with no lights so they don't jump out at you. Oh well population control (the deer not people)

Ya know... funny you should mention...

It's kind of ironic you say that because when the discussion about grille guards and all were going around, I got the overwhelming impression that many people don't really know just how much damage a deer can cause! I was saying that they could pretty much total your car/truck and kill or injure you or your passenger but it was kind of like a "whatever" atmosphere on the subject...

Proof is in the pudding here.... Check out the steering wheel also.. Pretty bent up!

Dog's aren't much better but moose and elk are FAR WORSE! I couldn't imagine hitting any animal bigger than a deer! I'd surely need to change my drawers if I did.... That is if I was still alive after it...

I saw a few years ago a honda that got the whole roof taken off by a deer.

you know , for such a beautiful creature it really too bad they breed like rats!

one time I was backpacking and hiked until dark trying to reach a river to camp at for the night , well I didn't make it and had to camp the night on a level spot on the old logging road that had been converted to trail and planed to move out at first light. The old road cut through some pretty steep land and must be used by the wildlife as well as backpackers , anyway very early that morning I had a BIG OLE BUCK about 6 feet from my head blowing & stomping his hoof ! Scared the he!! outta me , didn't know if he was wanting me to move or getting ready to charge me while I'm trapped in my sleeping bag . When I lifted my head he jumped straight up that embankment that was at least 6 or 8 feet tall then bound up that steep hillside like it was nothing .

by the way ... wheres the airbag in that Dodge ? do you have to hit the front end to have it deploy ?

Good questions about the air bag. I know that there is a sensor that when the acceleration changes too quickly (hitting something) the airbag will deploy, maybe there wasn't a sudden enough deceleration to deploy the bag. Dont know how much the bag would have helped though?

I got this one a work yesterday and it made sense. In the first picture or 2 you see a bridge behind them, supposedly the deer was on the road close to the bridge and a car spooked the deer and it jump off the bridge and landed on top of the Durango as pictured. I didnt see any damage to the front bumper of the Durango.

A friend sent me the same pictures this morning along with details of the deer's suicide. Seems he got tired of the Big bucks running him off from the ladies. So, he took the plunge off the Minnesota highway 101 bridge where it crosses I-394. The Durango was traveling on I-394.

A month ago another officer and I handled a fatal accident where the deer went through the windshield and killed the passenger. Pretty messy. I had always heard of it happening but I got to see it first-hand. That's Northern Minnesota for ya.

According to my Rescuer's Guide to Vehicle Systems, the airbag sensors are in the front bumper/grille area of the Durango.

I saw something similar to this on a call one time where a moose was standing on the road and got collected by a 2000 Explorer. The front bumper and grille had virtually no damage, the hood was crinkled and warped, and the windshield was completely destroyed. The leading 24" or so of the roof was pretty much gone as well. And as with this one, the airbags didn't go off.

Seen a lot of examples of damage animals can do to vehicles and vice-versa. Deer going out in front of cars, trucks, and other such things, moose, and once even a donkey. They really have the capability to mess a car up.
