Cheap sports cars mean trouble (semi OT)

With all the talk about irresponsible driving lately, I thought you guys might be interested in the car I saw over at BON. Seems the Dodge Razor, a 250hp Turbo/Intercooled sports car is aimed at the young crowd - est. price at only $14,500, it will probably have a huge aftermarket (my opinion) because kids will want to modify it...

In a way, im excited to see some inexpensive, fast, sportscars coming out, but I feel that making it "affordable" is a double edged sword and many irresponsible people that would otherwise not be able to afford a fast car will be a danger on the road.

I really dont think the age matters you can be an @$$HOLE driver no matter what age you are. Also dont forget how many Rich kid's parents hand them like porches as their first car. Dont have to have a fast car to cause an accident and kill someone. Just my $0.02 cents.

Yeah. It's irresponsible. Next thing you know, they'll be giving rednecks 380 hp pickup trucks.

This certainly isnt exact, but typically, if you can afford an expensive car, you have a certain amount of common sense... It also comes with age. Very often, a 16 year old (some with no common sense) is given a fast car and ends up dead.

For you youngins out there, dont get your panties in a wad. I know a number of responsible people under 18...... and a number of irresponsible people over 18 for that matter..

Just imagine this: We see ricers drive like idiots all the time... What happens when they actually have a fast car..

turbo/intercooled 250hp for only $14.5k? Not to go against there page but that just does not seem right.

Dodge has that new SRT version of the neon coming out. Depending where and what you read it's either turbo or supercharged, it's gonna put out less comparable power and the price point for that is gonna be slightly under 20K, just like the rest of the imports. So why would dodge release another vehicle that may be faster or as fast for that much cheaper?

What are they cutting costs on to get prices down on powrfule sports cars? Plastic bodies, aluminum frames, no airbags, paper seatbelts?

On a side note I agree with Vin that age isn't much of a factor in @$$hole drivers. But I also don't agree with powerfull cars for young drivers. The amount of kids that are responsible enough to own them is probably comparible with the amount that are given exotics as their first car.

Capt, I agree with your comments. This is only a concept vehicle, unlike the SRT Neon. As for why its so cheap - see below.

HERE is the original article at BON.

It offers the necessities for driving, nothing more. No power windows or mirrors, no radio or leather power seats, no frills whatsoever. Dodge Razor offers its two occupants lightweight, competition-style seats, four-point racing harnesses, storage behind their seats and the pure joy of driving. "Razor's interior is like a clean canvas. Our vision is that you would be able to get additional features through MOPAR to paint your ideal driving setting," said interior designer Schuttera.

This is only a concept. Who knows, maybe it will be the SRT Razor in a couple of years?

I still don't think it can be that cheap. Think about it

Our rims and tires - $250 a tire and can I assume our 18" rims are almost $400 a piece

the razor - 19" and 20" rims, gotta cost more then ours, tires about the same. Overall there still gonna be exensive

The engine is most likely gonna be the same as the SRT Neon, so maybe that will reduce the price.

A 6 speed tranny in a rear wheel drive car? I don't think dodge has any 6speeds in other cars that are rear wheel drive so there gonna have to get a new tranny made. There some $$$

No leather powerseats, most imports cars don't have those or it's an option

No radio or power anything, okay thats gonna save some money.

This car is gonna basicaly be a Miata with a more powerfull engine and no luxury stuff at all, and Miata's are in the $20's correct?

Last but not least, this car can be compared the Cobra R in terms of similarity. Made for going fast and nothing else, the Cobra R is $20k more then the Cobra. Yeah it's an extreme example but I don't think this car will hit the target price of $14.5 , I would say more aroun $17k-$19k.

If it comes out and is $14.5 I'll be seeing alot of you guys at a dodge dealership signing paperwork.

That is right, blame it all on the car companies. I guess the parents don't have any responsibility. A 16 year old cannot drive without parental consent.

Yeah, I think many times the concept pricing estimate is lower than actual.. Still, I havent seen another car that looks that nice under 20k. That SRT neon is butt ugly, IMO.

The best parenting in the world doesnt replace real world driving experience. Even the best kids get hit with peer pressure..
