Arrow Carbon Fiber Driveshafts

Regarding Brian K’s post
Whos the guinea pig?? Poss new upgrade

Because the company [ACPT] is approx. 3 miles from my home, I stopped by and talked to their driveshaft engineer. After getting under the L, he said by changing over to Carbon Fiber from steel 50% of the weight of the shaft would be saved which means more horse power at the rear wheels. It will also almost eliminate driveline vibration at high RPM’s, does away with about 50% (over steel) of the "twist" that occurs when torque is applied.

In additional to performance advantages, carbon shafts provide more safety vs. steel. Despite safety hardware like shaft loops and covers, a broken metal shaft can become a flailing bludgeon that beats up everything in it’s path and even vaulting the car or truck into the air. On the other hand, if there is failure with a carbon shaft, it will crumble not unlike that of a front windshield when broken. It disintegrates into thousands of small pieces.

Sorry about the length of this post but I did find it interesting.

Price is around $800.00. Anyone in for a group buy????? (just kidding)

Nice to know. I am currently having a carbon fiber D/S installed in my cobra as part of my
on going rebuild process.

Fordsales, what does the stock drive shaft weigh vs carbon fiber drive shaft. Also, how durable are these? Are they rock hard but glass fragile?

I know PST (Performance Shaft Technologies) sells carbon fiber shafts for 7-sec Mustangs. These machines are putting out well over 1200hp.

$800~!!! WOW~! Proud of those suckers! Even a racing aluminum shaft is a little over $400 and a stock replacement from your dealer is under $400.
Here's a trick question - what do the pro-stockers use?

The standart ACPT carbon driveshaft was used for a full season of racing, with over 400 runs, on a 1200+ horsepower Pro Stock car. Brought back for testing and inspection, the shaft was as good as new. I was told that Carbon shafts do cost more initially than metal shafts but you won't have to replace them as often.

Damn, I sound like a commercial.

Jim,

Thanks for the finding more info. Is the L driveshaft a standard unit that they stock?? or would it have to be custom made?? Not that I am ready to buy, but I am just curious.

Anyway, back to my orig post: Whos going to be the guinea pig???

I received an e-mail from M. from Ford and he wanted to order a shaft. He called the company and was told that they would need an L's shaft for exact measurements. M. e-mailed me and ask me to drive over and have them measure.

I drove over and was told for a discount ten needed to be purchased. But the big problem was: to measure my driveshaft I would have to take it off at home, drive it over and let them use it for three hours because they did not have the means to raise the L up to do it.

I am afraid that I do not have that ability and without them being able to measure the shaft, they could not give me an exact pricing.

The company is Huntington Beach. If someone is able to drop the shaft and let them get an exact measurement, let me know.

Just received another e-mail from M.

Just some additional information for you, I pulled the engineering drawing and reviewed it. I called Jeff at Inland Empire driveline and spoke with Jeff there. Inland Empire builds the yoke and the rear flange and ACPT does the carbon fiber, together they produce the carbon fiber drive shaft. I was quoted a price of $985.00 complete and I asked if we could get that down. Jeff told me that if we could get a few people together the price could be about $800.00. I told him that I would ask around and see if there would be some interested parties. There are about three or four individuals that I will ask because I think that they are willing to spend that kind of money. As I mentioned to Jeff, if we can get the price down I will provide them with a Lightning specific drawing to build too.

Please let me know your thoughts on this.
It looks like M. is starting a group-buy on carbon shafts. If anyone out there has some interest, e-mail me and I will keep you informed.

Nathan

Can't help you there at this time. When the engineer got under my L, he was surprised on how long the shaft was and said the I would lose 50% of the weight.

They do not know exactly what the weight will be until one is produced but their experience gives them an educated guess of a lose of 50%.
