Lightbulb Intercooler pump switch wiring made easy..

Hey all, Sal here. I know many have had problems wiring a switch for the intercooler pump in the past, so I figured I'd pass along this info on how to do it properly. First, you need to locate pin 70 on the PCM plug (White wire with an Orange tracer). This is the PCMs output to turn on the pump relay. You need to splice a wire into this wire. Then run that wire to a swtch. The other end of the switch must be wired to GROUND. The PCM does not supply voltage to it's outputs, it supplies ground. This gives you control over the intercooler pump relay. The power side of the relay trigger is energized when the key is in run, so naturally the pump will only come on in run, but this is no big deal. Doing it this way doesn't cause any screwy circuits that can blow fuses and melt wires as some have had happen. This way turns on the pump relay which is the safe and proper way to turn on the pump. Hope this helps and HAPPY COOLING!!

Sal,
What benefits are to be expected from doing this? What trips the pump on/off?

Lightbulb

It would be interesting to see some temp gages installed to see the difference in the glycol temps; however, I think to take full advantage of this mod an electric fan w/ switch should probably be placed in back of the coolant radiator.

The pump comes on a few moments after start up and runs non-stop until the ignition is turned off. This would alow you to turn it on between runs at a road course or drag strip without the engine running to help cool the SC and the intercooler fluid. This works with the ignition turned to the run position without turning it all the way to start.

I've done a simular mod on my Stang for the electric fan switch. Only works in the run position but really cools the engine off after you turn the engine off.

Thanks for the tip SAL,

Did the mod today and works great.

I would recommend removing the battery due to space in the eng. compartment.
The White/Orange wire is located on the bottom side of the harness. There is a wire that is visible without removing the hareness that looks like it might be white/orange but really it is red/orange so don't tap that one.

Once again
Thanks

Hey Guys,
Help me, I am an electrical idiot. Are you saying to use an on/off switch, one wire tapped into the white/orange wire and the other wire grounded? And mount the switch in the cab? Or just use a jumper wire with ground on one side and the other tapped into said white/orange, and just turning the key to the run position? I realize I am making it harder than it sounds, I'm just a little confused.(duh)
Thanks
Jim

Hey Trimble,

Just get a push button or Lever on/off switch
run one side to a ground
run the other side to the orange and white wire
no positive needed. DO NOT HOOK UP A POSITIVE

Turn the key to RUN ( NOT START ) and the pump will come on. You can't see it running from the drivers side so go to the other.

I also made a booboo and mounted an LED so I would know when it was on. Hooking the ground to the LED and not thinking when the PCM is on, it sends the ground reverse in the circuit and lights it when to truck is on. Very bright at night. Will have to put my Alarm LED there.

Question

Ok Got a quick ?. When is the only times the intercooler pump is on(with it being stock and no switcj add)? Just want to know when the pcm has it turned on and when it has it turned off.

Seems to remain on for a little after the engine is off. Kinda like a Turbo timer i guess. When the engine has cooled is when you will notice the pump turning on and off.

Haven't had a test run yet and the strip but will soon. Planning on Temp gauges before and after the I/C soon as well.
