OEM Brake Controller Requires Reflash ??

I have a new 2012 Screw XLT that came with Tow Pkg ...but did not have the OEM brake controller. I just purchased the OEM brake controller and found threads that describe the plug-n-play install.

I understand the "plug-n" part as there is a factory connector in the dash that simply plugs into the controller. As far as the "Play" part ...most threads indicate the option must be enabled by having the dealer enable the option in the truck's computer?

My salesman contacted the service dept. where I bought my truck and they are telling him they are 100% plug-n-play and they don't need to do anything to make the controller work.

So now I'm confused. Can someone shed some light?

They have to be flashed by the dealer to function correctly. Your dealer is incorrect

Not true. Update flash needed, info displayed in the info center.

I had to show the service manager the instructions that came with mine before he believed me. It takes about 15-20 minutes for them to flash. It works great with my new travel trailer....

How much did your dealer charge for the flash?

Mine charged $130.

Some have gotten it done for free.

It's a 5-10 minute job, but book rate is 1 hour.

I don't understand why a break controller doesn't come standard with the tow package

Do you need any kind of software flash when installing an after market brake controller like the Prodigy P2?

I have a P2 in my 2011. No flash needed, but there may be wiring needed if you dont already have the 7-pin harness installed

It will work but will not show in the cluster,it has to be turn on with the ford IDS under customer parameters. Had to do it when I put on my truck.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find the procedure in the manual to get it set up properly. I do have the towing package and the 7 pin plug at the bumper.

It seems as ford has gotten smart. They figured out people were buying compents after the fact and just plug and playing it. Now they figured they could get a peice of the pie by requiring a RE-Flash. its BS.

How?

If you order the TBC from the factory its $230.

You can buy a TBC for $95 from tasca, $130 max for the reflash and you are still coming out ahead.
