Smile The Police and Radar Detectors

Do the cops care if you have a radar detector? Anyone ever get pulled over with one? One more thing, whats your recommendation on one?

I live in Kansas, and I have gotten pulled over with one, and they just ignore it. They just have to rub it in and say " They don't work do they?" or tell me how they work with all the new detection systems they have and I say I know. They do work and I would recemend a Whistler or a Cobra model, had both and both work very well. Good luck!

Cool

They're illegal in VA and DC, however cops elsewhere love to give you written proof that detectors aren't that reliable. I got a ticket from the Ohio taxman who was using laser. Never even set off my visor mount laser/radar detector. Laser is generally aimed at the license plate. I think I'm gonna invest in a CB.

4X4, I've been one for 32 years and most of us could care less, I even have one. My son who drives a 99 cobra has 2 or 3, when he cranks up the inside of the car sounds like a video poker machine that just hit a royal flush until all of them set up. They work when smokey is lighting up someone else ahead of you and you have a detector sensitive enough to pick up that signal. If you get hit with the instant on radars or lasers, it is too late, but the guy a half mile or so behind you gets the benefit. Beside the 2 or 3 state in the US where they are illeagle, all of Canada prohibits them. I have been told that the Canadian police can actually confiscate your vehicle for having one, they can also confiscate your vehicle for having an illeagle weapon inside. I don't know where you live but take it out in Canada.

In Arizona a Radar Detector just means a ticket. The state is buying the latest and greatest radars with increased range and high speed processors. It makes it difficult to slow down in time to avoid a ticket. Most of the Highway Patrolman here have the option of a warning or a ticket depending on the road conditions, traffic, Etc. A radar detector just confirms the persons intent to speed. So normally a ticket is issued.

I drive around 100 miles per day (50 to work, 50 back home) and if I do the posted speed limit of 70 on the highway, I get home in about 45 minutes. If I do 80 I get home in 40 minutes. If I do 90, I'm a nutbag.

Is 5 minutes worth a speeding ticket?

>>>>I'm an officer in Va where they are definitly illegal. I'll have to agree with a previous post where someone stated that many officers (least most I know) view the use of a detector as having the intent to speed. Believe me when I say that depending on the speed and when the situation warrants it officers do occasionally give warnings(hey it's rare but it happens). But it's not gonna happen when your running a detector. It's pretty easy to tell who is running them even without using the VG2. If I'm in a posistion where I know you couldn't have seen me or were too far away at night to have known who I am, your speeding and the thing goes off, I check you with the radar and all of a sudden you hit the brakes and slow dramatically to the speed limit it's pretty obvious that you have a detector. It's just human nature to hit the brakes. If you are in heavy traffic then they do provide you with some protection. But when you travel alone they really don't do you much good.
>>>>Besides, I like to work radar where I can *shoot* (instant on/off) the beam at vehicles from behind. As they say it's all over but the crying at that point, even the valentine that detects radar from behind wont do you any good once you have been checked from the rear, all it's telling ya at that point is that you've been snagged. I have seen a couple of the valentines in speeders cars that I have stopped.
>>>>There was that one time I stopped a motorist with a detector in Va that I didn't write a ticket to. It was a truck driver I stopped for using a detector who was so disgusted with his detector that he put it under the wheel of his truck and ran it over. I didn't have the heart to write him after that.

In the last 12 years my Escort Solo wireless has saved me thousands of dollars. In the California and Nevada deserts with huge open expanses, you usually get plenty of warning. However, I have been caught 3 times by airplanes, which make a detector useless.

Wink

As mentioned before..if a cop is gunning you..there is nothing you can do and any detector is worthless.

The VERY best thing to do is keep a good watch ahead/behind you if you are traveling over the speed limit. Time and time again I have spotted speed traps and slowed down before I have been gunned. Police cars are required by law to be visible from a certain distance (varies by state). My wife/friends are constantly amazed at how I have spotted police cars sitting by the road from very long distances. (comes from being a pilot I guess). If you are not paying attention..then you can easily get nailed.

One good tip if you get gunned by a cop going in the opposite direction and you know you were speeding... act like you do not even notice him..and are adjusting your radio or something as the cop car goes by. Do not hit the brakes..because this is what they are looking for as an excuse to turn around and pull you over. It has worked many times for me. Guess the dumb &^%*&'s assume you were not paying attention and keep going.

Nothing works 100% of the time...I will admit this.

And when you're in the city, doesnt matter what speed you go, you'll get at the light at the same time as every one else. They're in a hurry to go no where.

I have been saved many times with a detector but I also got pulled over a couple of times because the trooper had the instant on set up and well it was to late and since I had the detector I got a ticket instead of a warning and the trooper told me that he looks at them as intent to speed so if you do get pulled over if you have time hide your detector before the cop sees it.

Cool

Just a note...
Don't waste your $$ on the Rocky Mountain Radar units...garbage. Orginally from Colorado, they moved to El Paso, I think.
Sell a "jammer" to "confuse the radar units.
They do not work. No, I didn't buy one..a local consumer reporter tested them with the
Colo State patrol with numerous vehicles and
they were worthless.
