Post Pics removing the hitch safety hooks

After removing the receiver hitch, it still didn't look that clean w/the safety hooks, so here's some pics of how I removed them.

Now, use a diegrinder to carefully remove.

Finish up using a 4" grinder w/60 grit flapdisk

Ahh, much better

Ooh. That's like watching someone castrate a bull. Nobody's taking a grinder to MY baby!

Thumbs up

Very Nice Peter!

Had a great time last Friday. Last night I looked under the rear and contemplated doing the same .... and now here is your post that you've done it. My grinding disk was worn more than I thought, and I discovered my supply was out as well. O well, a trip to the Home Depot this week will solve that tab problem. I noticed you're using the 'flap disc'. I discovered those this last year and man do they work fast. So what did you use to paint the ends after the grinding????

Cool

Joel,
Just your basic Krylon semi flat black. Yeah, aren't those flap disks incredible.

I haven't looked at my L yet but I noticed what appears to be bolts by the tabs you were grinding. Are these to hold the tabs and can they be removed this way?
I would rather not grind the tabs off. Besides, I guess I could always hang a foxtail or something from it. hehe

'00BlackLightning,

The bolts hold the bumper cover on. The tabs are welded to the bumper frame and require cutting if you want to remove them. I cut mine off the day after Peter did his photo shoot. Looks much better without them. My justification for jettisoning the tabs is that if I ever tow in the future, I’ll replace the hitch, which has integral tabs on it.

Good luck! You’ll feel much better after you’ve finished.

Question

Is the tow hitch as easy to remove as it looks? I.e just remove all the bolts? Is there anything tricky?

And how much does the hitch weigh (approx)?

Thanks...

Yes, it is very easy and it looks much better when your done. I seem to remember someone who put the hitch and bolts on a scale and it was 50 lbs.
