Post RedLine's response to oil change

Following is RedLine's response to my e-mail regarding when to change to synthetics.
___________________________

We recommend waiting long enough for the rings to seat before starting with
the Red Line motor oil. This will typically happen before 1,000 miles, if
you wait a little longer closer to 2,000 miles most of the initial wear
will have taken place and be out into the oil and filter. At 3,000 miles it
is certainly safe to start using the Red Line motor oil, I would recommend
the 5W30.

I'm working on a Redline dealership for a client of mine. If successful you will be able to buy as the "Lightning Group" at a discount. I believe the retail on Redline syn oil is about $7.75 a quart. They also make other great products like Waterweter, a great additive for your radiator and intercooler. My sole interest in the deal will be to secure these products for myself and others in our group who would like to buy them at a discount. I will be receiving no $$$ out of the deal. I'll keep you posted.

That is great. That is why I am doing the group buy on Autophysics filters.

I hoped you would see this post. I knew you'd like it.

Noelvm,

A group purchase sounds great. I was going to call redline tomorrow to order some. My L has 2,000 miles on it. I'll wait to hear about your group purchase.

I talked with Redline today. They are sending the dealer packet for my client. Should be here by Monday. He will make a decision based on Redline policies and prebuy requirements. I'll let you know.

The retail price of $7.75 for Redline's synthetic motor oil is about twice what Mobil 1 costs... is it -that- much better?

My local auto parts store sells Redline for about $5.99 per quart. The Mobil 1 they sell is just a bit cheaper.

Here's an interesting comparison between Mobil 1 and Redline http://cjsupra.kendra.com/oil-spec.html .

A Walmart (near my home) in the San Diego/Oceanside area sells 5 qt. containers of Mobil 1 for about 16 bucks. About 1 time in 3 that I'm in the store they have these on the shelf.

RedLine's response to my e-mail regarding filters for their syn. oils.

There isn't a need for a special oil filter with the Red Line, we just recommend a good quality filter, I like the Wix filter.

I sent an email to Chris, the guy that is doing the test on oil at the site in STROHM post above. He sent back a very nice response to several questions which I will post in part here.

1. Have you done any tests on the longevity claims of synthetic oil for extended use.

ANS: Just about all synthetics out there of any decent quality will safely go 10,000 miles. The biggest consideration here is the fact that dirt, deposits and generally the crud that your oil holds in suspension away from the metal parts in your motor are the things which force oil changes...usually way before the oil itself wears out. Yes, oil filters will catch a lot of this (over a certain micron size...and depending on the quality of your filter), but not all of it. So, essentially, after a while, I guess the best analogy would be the filter keeps the equivalent of large grit sandpaper from acting on the bearing surfaces of the motor, but past a certain point, there's still some fine grit action in there after a while. This is partly why the oil gets black.

The other factor is the oil oxidation and TBN(TOTAL BASE NUMBER). Oil oxidizes with exposure to air (just like anything w/ metal bits in it) and you can see on my charts just how much the percentage spikes when I simply topped off a little from an already open container. Makes you want to always use fresh stuff. TBN is simply a measure of the oil's additives. I did this on the baselines to compare with specs from Mobil and Redline to see if they were on the money (they were).
(me...on his chart he is changing his oil at various intervals. He ran the Redline several times for 3537 and 3582 miles. He has run the Mobil 1 Tri-syn 2503, 2659, & 2561. He admitted to being rather **** about changing his oil).

2. I asked additionally about why he liked the Mobil 1 tri syn over the Redline.

ANS: Yup, I like Mobil's new Tri-Synthetic formula over Redline, hands dow. I used to be a pretty solid Redline devotee, but after seeing the fact that wear numbers were half as much, I couldn't wait to switch. This has been corroborated by a similar test on two different Mustang 5.0 motors too. (by a mustang group guy. He came to the same conclusion.)
Don't get me wrong..both oils are very good, but Mobil 1 seems to be better and hell, it's also cheaper to boot....

I didn't read this until I got home, but I stopped in Super K-mart today to pick up some stuff for my wife and they had Mobil 1 Tri-Syn on sale for $4.00 QT. Bought six and put in today. 10W30 (Sorry Ford. It's already over 100 degrees and I just couldn't do the 5W30). I turned 20K on my L today.

EDITED 8/13/00--After intensive additional study I have come to the conclusion that my concepts of oil's behavior in an engine are not relevant for synthetic oil. Quite simply it does not breakdown like regular oil and indeed does not breakdown at all. I am going to run the 5W30 and no longer worry about it.

I read Strohm's post-reply and went to
http://cjsupra.kendra.com/oil-spec.html

to look over the tests. It looks like I will also go to Mobil 1 and change my oil to syn. at the next change which will be at 4000 miles

Thanks STROHM. This is the first techinical data on comparisons of syn oil I have seen. While most of it is over my head, it would appear the tester considers Mobil 1 tri-syn the best with Redline second. It appears he is changing oil every 2000 miles which doesn't really address many of my questions. I am going to try to email him.

The best regular price I have found for Mobil one around here in Houston is at Target $4.50 qt.
