Post How Many Miles Should I Put On My New L Before I Change The Oil?

I am getting close to five hundred miles on my silver L and was wondering when should I change my oil for the first time? I plan to use Mobil 1 syntheic 5W-30. Is this what most of you use? Also has anyone noticed a difference on how you truck runs after using syntheic oil? I would love to see a before and after dyno. Thanks, HANKFAN

I called SVT and they said 3000 it what they would recommend. I did mine at 500 and 1500 with regular Ford oil. When I get to 3000 I am going with the Mobil one.

Boy this is a hard one.

Being a motorcycle nut, you have to wait about 5000 miles before you should change the oil. The bikes cylinders (niske?) are so hard now days that it almost won't break in properly.

When I picked up my L the dealer said, what ever you do wait until 5000 miles or it won't break in properly, hey same story?

Anyhow my brother is a chemical engineer in Houston and according to him all motor oils are so close to each other that as long as you change the oil and filter every 3000 miles the brand and type doesn't really matter. He did some big study last year and he stated that this was with the major companies oil thou, I still thin Red Line oil is the best but he didn’t test it, dam.

I did change my oil at 3000 miles and smelt a slight hint of gas in the oil but I think this is a by-product of a heavy right foot! You might want to check this yourself.

So in conclusion I think a straight answer to your question is going to be pretty hard to find.

My first was at 1200, then it will every 3000 after that.

I was told by an oil expert that I should wait until the L has about 10,000 miles before changing to Mobil 1.

Any thoughts about this??????

Change the breakin oil to 5W30 synthetic at 500 miles not 5000. The post above is wrong. Synthetic can go 10000 miles with a filter change and 1 qt top off in the middle. Redline told me this in an email and Mobil use to say it but don't anymore because they don't want to get into a lawsuit with the car manufacturers. I did the above on my 93 and when I sold it with 155k on it, it ran like new and burned no oil between changes.
Synthetic oil is NOT like rugular oil and as such it does not breakdown like regular oil and does not become contaminated like regular oil. It provides better protection at start up when most of your engine wear occurs, and it flows with less effort which will give you improved gasmileage and more horsepower. Don't wait 5000 miles that's BS.

I'm still using the 5W30 although it goes against my grain to use that light an oil here in Texas, but synthetic doesn't burn like regular oil and has a much higher temperature rating than regulare oil so, what the hell, I'm going with the engineers on this one.

I only have 1000 mile on my new lightning. I plan on changing the oil at 3000. I think it's a waste of money to do it sooner, and probably prolongs the break in period. I would also recommend using dino oil for the 1st oil change before switching to synthetic. Again, this is for break in. Next, I use Mobil 1 in my 98LS1 and have from the 2nd oil change on. I have 54K and have never burned a drop of oil. The Mobil 1 turns to crud at 3500 miles and should be changed no more than every 4k. My car always runs better after an oil change. Finally, to F1car, I sincerely hope no one with a motorcycle takes you seriously, as almost everyone who rides a bike knows, you have to change the engine oil at 500 miles on every motorcycle made, because the engine (4-stroke) shares the oil with the transmission, and the transmission gives off tons of metal chips at break in an the are definitely bad for the engine to be circulating in the engine! I've only owned 20 motorcycles that I can count, and raced mx, desert, and roadrace. My Lightning will get dino oil at 3K and then synthetic after that. I might go with something different than Mobil 1 this time around.

Not that this is the best method, because I don't believe anyone knows, but here is what I did:

900 miles, dumped factory oil, put in Moble Dino oil (lazy, kept orginal filter)
3000 miles, Changed oil, and oil filter (Moble One filter and Oil)

Hey guys,

I changed mine @ 1000 mi and while I was draining the collection pan into my standard gallon milk jugs to go to recycle, I noticed quite a few metal shavings, (brass, copper, and silver). Just too spooky to leave the original fill in for too long after it comes out of the box.

My MB's came w/ Mobil-1 0-40 (available only in Europe) factory fill and the factory says it could go up to 20 Kmi between changes! On average the manual says 1 yr intervals w/ 10 to 20 K mi between changes.

Hankfan,

It seems like most members are recommending Mobil 1. I have a subscription to Nutz N Boltz newsletter (www.motorminute.com) According to them, Redline synthetic is clearly the best. Without getting too technical, Mobil 1 uses PolyAlphaOlefins as a base stock, as do almost all synthetics sold in stores. When PAOs burn, they produce ash - an oil contaminant. RedLine uses a polyol ester base stock, which costs much more than PAOs. Only these esters are durable enough to withstand the rigors of jet engine operation. You can call Nuts n Bolts at 1-800-888-0091 and order back issues that deal with synthetics. I think there were 3 newsletters analyzing this, and it got very detailed. You can also call RedLine at 1-800-624-7958.

My SVT dealer gave me a free oil and filter change at 1500 miles and said to go 3000 after that. Got a coupon for it and everything so I figured it was standard procedure to change initial at 1500 miles on SVT vehicles.

Franko- I have a question: I also have a CLK430, and it's got about 2500 miles on it so far. The dealer says I don't need to change the oil until 10,000 miles, but from what I've read, that seems a bit much. I'd like to switch to Mobil 1 or Redline at some point, so if anyone else has any ideas on when to do this, I'd appreciate hearing them. I'm planning to get the oil changed soon, probably with "Dino" oil, and then synthetic. Any opinions on this would be much appreciated.

I would certainly hope the filter would remove any "metal chunks circulating" in the oil. I do what the book says, it avoids any confusion on warranty issues.

Just my $0.02

Hey Ando,

My CLK came w/ Mobil 1 as the factory fill. They used to ship MB's with 'break-in oil' which was non-detergent and HAD to be changed @800-1200 miles, but not anymore. I hear you on what the dealer says about the 10K changes, it's hard to believe... I'm going to let mine go (after the first change) until the the on-board service indicator says to change it (probably once a year the way we drive.)I'm trusting the fact that I've never had an oil related problems (even w/'dino oil') in anything I've owned.
For now however, I'm going to change it @ 1000 miles and use Mobil-1 15W-50.

Two other points. When Mobil-1 came out in the 70's they were recommending 25 K mi change intervals. These were retracted (manufactures politcal pressure?) after a few years. Why won't it last for 10K?

I've tried Redline but @ $8.00/qt I can't see the cost/benefit. In addition Mobil-1 used a petroleumn based carrier oil in the past and have now switched to an all-synthetic formula which was a big argument that Redline made in the past. Don't get me wrong Redline's is a quality product.
