Angry Stupid Fog lights....

Y'all, has anybody else had trouble with fog light covers? I don't know if it is just me, but I had to have the third one replaced on my passenger side fog light yesterday. The first time I thought I caught a rock just right the second time I was a little frustrated but I am thinking it has to be a defect cause I had the third one replaced yesterday. The stupid kit costs my dealership 119.00 because you have to get the set and luckily it is covered by my warranty, but dang am I the only one?

you must have Extended warranty. It seems that some of the fellas on here have had to replace them out of their pocket.

I found one of mine cracked the 2nd week I had it. Went and bought a new one for $90 (cheaper than the ones on the 94 L). But I am not going to put it on until it completly breaks. They are to expensive to replace just because it is cracked.

I think, in some earlier posts, someone has or makes foglight covers. Some kind of protective cover? Maybe it was Wyldman?

It was Wyldman, was being the operative word here. However, never fear, I would never leave ya'll in the lurch. They are available (the exact same pieces I was getting) from www.TexasMustang.com for 1/2 the price, $19.99.

Thier website is rather spartan right now, but thier phone number is listed, it's toll free (I think) and the part numbers were recorded in a post a couple of weeks ago:

GTS part#'s
Clear GTO-981C
Smoke GTO-981s
carbon fiber GTO-981X
Amber GTO-981A

Thanks to Stang58 for finding this info...

I believe they also carry replacement fog light assemblies for $49.99 (I think. They are cheaper than the dealer's price and can be purchased singly).

Thumbs down

I've cracked 3 of them so far. The glass doesn't fall out and they still function so after spending $98 on one I got some of Wyldmans covers and just slipped them on the cracked ones. Screw it 'til they have a recall, then they can buy them.

My driver side broke a few days ago. In 26,000 miles on my Cobra I haven't had a problem, but 7,000 miles on the truck now I need one. Who should we complain too? I'd like to keep it original but there is now way I'm paying that much for something that will break again.

One of mine broke even with the covers installed. Not a mark on the cover, however. Light still works, so have not yet replaced.

A real mystery how this might have happened. My earlier post on this topic generated several replys speculating that heat from the fog lamp (and, possibly, combined with sudden cooling from water spray) may have caused the problem. Be interesting to see if Ford offers an explanation and/or recall. Doubt it, however.

Exclamation

The covers could be causing the lights to overheat. Try drilling 2-3 small (1/16") holes at the top and bottom of the cover to provide some air circulation.

Hi
I worked in lighting for a few years. There could be several things going on here and without the benefit of seeing the damage first hand this is just an opinion. As others have expressed (Heat), I think what you are seeing is the different thermal expansion rate between the two materials (fog lamp lens) and the acrylic of the cover. That would be why there is no evidence of stone pecking.

Steve,

I think it was Wyldman who also mentioned about drilling the ventilating holes. Not a bad idea and I'll probably give it a try.

BABolt,

Interesting hypothesis and may be the case. Assuming the two materials expand when heated, would you say that the glass expands more quickly (and/or to a greater degree) than the plastic and therefore would break when its expansion is hindered by the surrounding plastic cover? If this is the case, would the plastic cover be strong enough to cause the glass lens to crack without itself being damaged?

I will check it out when I go to work on Tuesday. I don't know the material of the covers (GE lexan, polycarb, etc). Could do some checking in the materials lab. I will post what I find out.

If you need to drill the holes, use a sharp bit and go slow. The covers are Lexan and will crack fairly easily under the stress of a drill bit.

BTW, it wasn't my idea to drill the holes, but it does have merit if heat is indeed the problem.

Mine just upped and cracked. No evidence of an impact, no covers either. Sounds like thermal shock.
