Performance Oil

Performance Oil
I have received a wide variety of responses to this question when asking people. What type of Motor Oil & Gear oil should be used when I change mine at 500 miles? I was told Castrol synthetic, Mobil 1 synthetic, and Oilzun. Which should I trust? Any help on this topic would be extremely helpful.
Thanks,

I'd run it 3,000 and switch to Mobil 1. Make sure the rings are seated before going Mobil 1...I had an '87 Ranger that wasn't seated and it used oil 'til 20,000 miles, then it quit. That's the only thing I've ever had any problem with Mobil 1. May not have even been that but I can't think of anything else.

I think most people here including myself are using Mobil 1.

You have to be careful with synthetics. I am a firm believer in them and use them in all of the vehicles that I have owned. Like everyone is saying, make sure those rings are seated well with some good miles on them. I had switched to Mobil 1 in my 95 Z28 at about 2000 miles and I had some terrible oil consumption after that. Why? Simply because the rings weren't seated properly at all. It was all covered under warranty and the dealership that I was going to was great about the whole situation. I am going to be waiting till I switch on this truck. I will go with a semi-synthetic as the miles get highter and then gradually switch to synthetic.

This seems to be an eternal topic. Both Porsche and Corvettes come from the factory with Mobil 1. I have used it since '79 in everything from generators to motorcycles to cars. It is better when hot (in Phoenix) and cold (in Colorado). It also comes in the correct weight, i.e. 5-30. I also used Mobil 1 gear oil in the ltd. slip dif on my One Lap of America car. If you look around the cold pits at Indy car races you will see Mobil 1 (even when other companies are sponsors!) Nuff said.

Darin, I ran the One Lap in 1999. The car was a Rod Millen modified GS400. The article on the event was in Car & Driver last month. Note, they have a Truck class in One Lap, and as far as I know, a Lightning has never been entered (hmmmmmmm!)
One of my best friends entered a superhcarged Dodge RT with poor results (the truck not the driver). The brakes completely fried after three events (about 10 hot laps, the top speed was limited to 113 mph. I think a Lightning could have won it (at least in Truck class)

Why does Ford say this in their SVT FAQ?
"Q: Can I use synthetic oil in my SVT vehicle?
A: Ford Manual Transmission engineers and SVT do not recommend the use of synthetic lubricants."

I was told by SVT that they say that because they have not done extensive testing with synthetic oils, although it would not void the warranty.

SVT told me 10k+ before switch to synth. oil.
Torco synth. can be run asap because it has a scuffer in it, which will allow break in of parts. I am using regular Mobil oil now and will switch to Mobil 1 ,when the time is right. I have used Mobil 1 for 12+ years in my Turbo Buicks with great results. I am also using Purolator PURE ONE filter on truck ,anyone else use this filter ?
BTW, Redline Synth. trans. fluid is great!
