best setup

i want to start racing but don't have too much $ what would be the best setup for a 1993 f150 with a 5.8l V8. I only want to spend around $500 for now until i get more $.

gears! or you could do basic bolt-ons like K&N air filter, catback exhaust and some underdrive pulleys.

what are the positives and negatives of underdrive pulleys I don't see how they would work as good as i've herd if the radiator fan and the power steering pump run off of that belt? Is there any bolt ons that don't harm your steering or cooling?
