Resurrecting a barn find. Truck has standard shift, new fresh gas in front and rear tanks. Starts and runs well. Drove it to the NAPA store 10 minutes away, ran well, no issue. On return trip, I noticed a high pitched whining noise and engine started to jump and sputter. Engine quit. Let the truck sit for a hour or so and it fired right up with no whining noise.

I'm thinking the whining noise is the inline fuel pump. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Fuel pump can make that noise. You have a low pressure pump in each tank and a high pressure pump on the frame rail.
Maybe that's why it got parked in the barn. As old as the truck is, I would replace all the fuel pumps with new, high quality ones.
If one of them isn't on it's way out now, odds are it's going to happen in the near future. Those pumps are most likely over 25 years old.

Change the fuel filter and throw some Techron in the gas. Wouldn't hurt to change the plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor.

Going to start with the fuel filter and inline pump. Instructions say to remove fuel pump fuse. No fuse is listed or identified on fuse panel under dash. I don't believe the relay under the hood is the fuse mentioned in the fuel pump instructions.

Is there a fuse panel I'm missing? Thanks.

Start with just the filter. If it's been sitting a long time it could be clogged - and the Techron should help clean things up. You may not need a pump.

Thanks for your posts. I changed the filter and the inline fuel pump. Ran fine for 1/2 hour and then the fuel pump started to sing again, high whine just like the old pump, but not quite as loud. Engine stalled.

Would a failed tank pump cause the in line pump to work like that. Pump and fuel filter were very warm / hot to the touch.

Just a question for a better versed person to spit ball, glc maybe? He has dual tanks, I seem to remember hearing about a problem with the tank switching components. I can't recall the symptoms or specifics, but could this be related to his problem?
