Unhappy Heater control panel (why did I start this??!!)

Hi gentlemen,

I got this great idea to replace my control panel on my 1990 F350 since I was able to buy a brand new one (Ford) one almost for nothing. I had to replace my switch anyway so it seemed like a good idea at the time. Wow, what a headache.

The new panel is exactly like mine except that the new one has one heavy wire that is gray in color. It appears to have a grommet indicating it goes through the firewall and on the end it has a small round robber plug maybe 1/16 of an inch. I have no idea where this goes since mine did not have one but it seems to be important and before I button things up I would like to know for sure whether I need this attached to something.

I tested this thing and then took it back out because the selector does not want to put air through the vent, only defrost and heat.

Anyone willing to help out here would be greatly appreciated.

John
