what's a decent offer?

So there is a 1990 F250 custom single cab log bed 4x4 not sure of the engine other than definatly gas with 57xxx miles at my fire dept where I work. The dept is upgrading vehicles and its a matter of time before this one goes too. I was gonna put the feelers out with a price that I am interested but can't find anything on a decent price I could offer. Its low miles but hard city miles fully loaded and towing a boat. What are these things worth?
I know a lot of the older equipment goes to auction but if I can make a decent offer that would compete with an auction (I know auctions are hit or miss) I might be able to get it.

Thanks in advance guys.....oh and its kind of a faded lime green color so that might (hopefully) hurt it at auction.

Oldest I can see on kbb is 94 at least on my phone at the moment and the same truck as a 94 is between 4800 and 6000. That's seems high and more than I would pay. I looked at auto trader so see if there were any for sale and nothing

You can try www.nada.com They go back to 1926, but they don't ask for mileage or other important info, like private party vs. retail.

For my zip code, the low retail on that truck was like $2,700 and the high retail was much much more, like $9,000 with a 460 and factory air. Private party or trade in should be lower, but they don't show those on their free site anymore.

Nada says it could have a 302, 351 or 460 motor, so you might want to make sure you can live with what's in there. 460 is going to be thirsty, and 302 might not have enough guts.

It could also have a 4.9 I6, which is very likely if it's a work truck.

Without seeing a picture, if it runs well, I'd feel out 2k. If it has problems, less.

Careful there. Getting fair market value is the best deal for the taxpayers.

Lots of potential for abuse if the higher ups at the department can cut below market deals on used vehicles.

If the department has recent auctioned a comparable vehicle, maybe that would be enough proof of value to base an offer.

Good point, but that's like worrying about flies when there's a tiger in your kitchen. Of all the things our tax dollars get wasted on, helping a firefighter out a little bit is the least of my concerns.

Thanks for all the advice but i work for a fairly large dept and i know they wouldnt give me a deal on it. If they sell it out right i wont have a chance but if it goes to auction there is no way to know what it will bring so if i put the word out at 1500 i think thats a decent offer if all they can say is no i suppose. the whole bed is packed with water rescue gear (a guess is at least 700lbs worth) and there is a 19ft rescue boat hooked up at all times. So there is always a close to if not more over 1000lbs on it all the time and ui wouldguess most of the 57000 miles are loaded and towing.

here is a pic

I'm glad to see that thing is still is use honestly. It looks pretty damn good and supposedly y'all take pretty good care of your stuff and keep em all bright and shiny. The fact that it's got lights and a FD paint job certainly lower the value for the average consumer, which is good.

Seeing that I'd still hold at 2k. What is the 8th digit on the VIN?

Is a lot nicer then the former fire truck I picked up back in the day.

You never said how it is equipped, engine, trans, AC, PS, PB,etc.

I bet you are going to be amazed at what it sells for if it goes to an auction that is open to the public.

Its got 5.8 auto trans manual locking hubs the interior is pretty rough for the milage but I guess the wear matches the age and not to sure about the rest of power options.

When I get back to that station I'll check on the VIN.

Another question is if I were to get a decent price like 1200 and cleaned it up maybe paint a solid color and clean up the interior could I make some money off this?
