every time i put my truck in four wheel drive and then back up to unlock the hubs it makes noise and i have to back up again to stop it or it will make a thump noise any help would be appreciated

 

Pull apart the front hubs and see what might be the cause
There are parts inside that possibly are broken or dry of lube.
This type hub has been used as far back as at least 1984 on Touch control 4x4.
Have Bronco and a Ranger with this type Hub and touch control.

Or, ditch the crappy auto hubs for a not hard swap of manual lockers that pretty much work forever no problems.
