Sun Roof

I installed a pop up/pop-out sun roof. You can remove the glass. It will serve me well in the Mtn Bolt. I had two from a prior build. I painted one glass piece white to reflect the summers heat and have the tinted one available for the rest of the year.

If you have ever made a cut-out and installed a speaker you can do this. Trace the pattern that comes with it on the roof. Align it just aft of the sun visors to position it correctly. That keeps it behind the visors, just in front of the cab light and you avoid trouble with trimming it. The two panels of sheet metal are spaced too far apart at the back of the cab with the inside radius rounded much more that the outside of the cab. One cut with my jig saw got the sheet metal and headliner together. Drop the sun roof in with caulking around the frame and clamp it in tight by screwing on the trim frame inside. I spent as much time installing it as I spent roughing-up the extra glass and painting it.

This was an inexpensive unit from JC Whitney.

I'd be nervous for one more leak point.

There are 2 kinds of sunroofs:
Those that leak and those that are going to.

If it's only "going to" after 5 years or more, I'll take one.

It didn't leak in 5 years installed in my Bronco. I have kept the seal fresh with Armor All. It would be easy to remove and reseal should it leak around the frame.

I live near the Rocky Mtns. and enjoy the view up at the tops and ridges when cruising a forest service road. I also like the added ventilation to keep the heat down when hopping into my parked truck in the summer or on the road when the temp is right. Then there is also the added sun and warmth in the winter. The sun roof is a win for me and I enjoy it.

That looks nice man. I may look into this myself. As far as the nay sayers with the leak info yes that was true on most T tops and Sunroofs all through the 70's, 80's and even some in the 90's. As far as new kits the manufacturers have better grades of rubber and better kits. This isn't to say they never leak nowadays just they are less likely and as you said if you were smart enough to install it I'd bet my paycheck you are smart enough to check it once in a while.
