Im looking at buying, what should I know?

I'm thinking about buying a 1995 f-150 6 cylinder, regular cab, 5 spd. The guy says the egr is bad and so its running a little rough. Could this be a sign of bigger issues? what are common issues with this truck? It's at 170,000 miles, but seems to be in really good shape. I have just dealt with a Taurus with a blown headgasket, I dont want another major engine project.. I need a daily driver. I used to own a 01 6cyl 5spd, and got about 18mpg, can I expect similar mileage?

The 300 cid has been around for 40 years....including used in UPS trucks for decades......they are work-horses in every sense! It is not unusual for them to go 250k+ miles. The 5 speeds are built by Mazda....weak by comparison to the other truck tranny's but adequate for a medium duty use F150. Known issues, waterpumps (ten to loose bearings about 40-50,000 miles) and the top plate on the tranny tend to leak as they get older...not a big deal, just top it off every 6 months with ATF (yes in the manuals).
Gas mileage....anywhere from 15 to 19 mpg hwy depending on what differential gears it has.

But, that truck looks like it was a carpenter's truck......they can be abused with heavy loads. It also looks like re-paint...check very, very carfully for body/frame repairs.

There's no major problems with the old body style ford trucks. But that truck looks like a truck someone is flipping. Cheap paint job, replaced grille off a xlt.

http://nashville.craigslist.org/cto/2829732529.html someone put on another front bumper. Order a new vent bumper off lmc and you would have a nice truck.

Thanks for the help, I agree, it probably is a flipped truck, the guy sounded like he had a small buisness and probably did this on the side. @need4racin thanks for the input, I don't want an 8cyl because of the gas, and my limit is 2000.. I saw the one with the gay sideskirts already lol, thought that was funny. I hate to say it but I think im going to go with a Chevy that I found, its a 95 6cyl auto for 1600, guy had it listed at 2900 and dropped because Im a friend of a friend. I'll be back to fords in a few years though, my dream truck is a restore/rebuilt 88-91 F250 with 7.3 Diesel, 4wd, 5spd. Can't quite afford it yet though.
