Project Twister has begun!!!

My neighbor's son in law is needing a 4.9 to put in a 91 for his daughter to drive when she turns 16. He came by today to take a look at it while I was adjusting the timing. He asked what I wanted for it. I shrugged and asked "you got an engine hoist and some time?" "yeah" he says. I say "tell you what give me a hand with the swap and the engine is yours." A deal was born. I promised to provide the non alcoholic drinks (at least till the jobs done) and a meal every night he's out. Also I told him he could have anything related to the 4.9. He had to tell his wife what was up while I cleaned up the garage. He came back, pulled ol red in the garage, and started wrenching. We worked till about 8pm (2hrs) and the engine is pretty close to being pulled. We also looked at the difference of the harnesses. Looks to be a slight PITA but very doable. So far the rad, shroud, ac comp, fipk, a.i.r lines and headers are disconnected. Tomorrow is the guy's birthday so I'lll finish disconnecting the harness, trans bolts, and motor mounts. Tuesday looks like we will be able to get the engine, trans, and exhaust out and start cleaning it up. I'm also going to pull everything that I can make use of either now or later. I should have anything I will need for quite sometime.
It was weird working on it though. We pulled out so much debris. Pieces of homes, people's former lives. Kind of a somber moment for me.

Kinda crappy photo but its an idea.
I will post more as it progresses.

I would like to. But its just not in the cards at the moment. Plus I think its already 3g as far as the alt is concerned.

It's hard to tell in the pic if it is a 3g. Does it have a fan on the outside? Here's some pics:

I glanced at it last night but couldn't tell ya. I look when I get home and post a pic. But I can tell you this the cases on your pics don't look anything like mine. I don't think.

Here's a better comparison, these truck never came with anything but these 2 kinds of alternators. Unless the PO swapped it out on either truck, it's a 2G. Typical output of a 2G is around 65 amps, 3Gs are up to 130A (depending on which one you get). Getting a 130A 3G was one of the best upgrades I've done. Saginaw is the power steering pump they used in vans, it is stronger, quieter, and more reliable. I was sick and tired of the power steering moan that all ford is famous for, so I swaped in the saginaw. The steering wheel turns much, much easier and the pump is near silent.

Well I looked at mine and I was a little disheartened. It's a 2g.

It's an easy swap for the most part, the 3G is a slightly bigger casing than the 2G so you have to grind on the bracket a little (not much). lemme go find a pic.

It might be a little easier to grind the notch while you have the engine out, even if you don't install the 3G now, it'll be nice to have it ready for the future install. You will be upgrading in the future right?..... http://www.google.com/search?q=2G+alternator+fire

your link said if I use the 95 amp I won't have to notch the bracket. so what's the stock amp rating for these trucks? Do I really need more than 95 amps? Also what's the deal with the mega fuse and how many amps does it need to hold? As for the install, lemme get this right. plug in harness, connect charge cable to alt, run charge cable to mega fuse, connect positive battery cable to mega fuse, and attach single wire to the Ford green/ red wire and that's it? if it is, I'm going to the jy pretty quick (next payday) and getting me one. can I buy the mega fuse from a parts slinger?

The stock one on my 89 was 65 amps, but trust me, it's worth it to go 130, the grinding isn't that much at all. Mine came from a 1995 Mustang I believe, you can get it off of any early 90s Thunderbird IIRC. The megafuse can be had from Fordfuelinjection.com (owner is on FSB, and a very good\smart guy), or any car audio shop. The factory rated fuse was 175amp, I have a fuse\relay box off of an early 90s T-bird that has the Megafuse on the side, 4 relays, and a whole bunch of fuse built in. Follow the link in my sig for a write up on the swap, but you don't need to purchase the harness, you can just modify the stock one. You WILL need an upgraded charge wire though, no doubt about it.

Also, I dunno if your planning on pulling the upper plenum, but now could be a good time to swap the injectors to Explorer injectors lol.
