74 truck
So I'm looking to sell my truck and buy a 74 dodge club car with 69,000 on it
But top speed is only 55 miles an hour
It is on 37s on stock gears
I want to down size to 35s instead of re gear
Is that why the top speed is all messed up cause this guy is runnig 37s on stock gears
Cause I don't want to buy the truck if it's going to stay that slow?

they werent built to be fast... had a friend that ran 35's on his stock 78 dodge. no issues. pretty sure he bought the thing new. I met him in the late 90's. He'd been running 35's on it for quite some time. havent seen him in about 5+ years though, since I moved.
I had a 78 for a while, planned to play with it but never had time and sold it. it had 33's on it and they might as well have been donuts as far as power was conearned.
those 318's are tough with a little maintenance and lovin.

74 was about as bad as it got in terms of complex, ineffective, inefficient and failure-prone emissions controls. Whatever performance issues you are seeing are likely related to that and are not likely to be easily fixed since most of the parts are no longer available. I wouldn't touch it with the proverbial 10 ft. pole.

If it will only pull 55 with 37's, it probably doesn't even have a 318, it's probably got a slant 6. Even with stock tires, it's very underpowered.
I was in the military back then, and they had a lot of Dodge crew cabs. Most of them had the 6 with automatics, and they wouldn't get out of their own way. We had one with a 318 and a granny box manual, that one had some *****. It had a pintle hook on it, and we used to pull all kinds of equipment around with it. Both the 6 and the 318 were almost indestructible engines, and the Torqueflite auto was a strong tranny, but the rest of the truck was junk.
