Replace Smog Pump With Air Compressor?

I'd like to replace my smog pump with an air or a/c compressor so I can have onboard air. Has anyone done this?

That would be illegal for use on public roads.

Not only is a belt-driven compressor significantly larger than the smog pump (meaning it won't fit); it's MUCH heavier, more expensive, and more difficult to install than several electric compressors.

People have given up A/C before to make onboard air.

I've seen the ones that use the a/c compressor for air, but I'm not willing to give up my a/c in Florida. I'm sure I could make something work in place of the smog pump, I was just hoping someone had done it and had some input.

Electric. There are plenty of good ones available. Keep all the emissions systems working.
