Fans, and Tachs

So I have a couple of questions, first; instead of doing an electric fan swap, can't i get most of the benefits by simply taking the clutch off and installing a 6-blade flex a lite fan? Light weight, cheaper and no draw on the alternator? second, anytime i start my truck the tach jumps to 2500 or so and stays there and then doesnt go beyond about 3000 while driving. And no that is not my actual idle rpm. Any tips and opinions are appreciated.

A flex fan will draw more HP than a properly functioning clutch fan.

When not engaged, the clutch fan draws very little HP, something on the order of 2 HP IIRC. When it is needed does it engage and then it draws about 10-12 HP until it cools things down and automatically disengages.

The flex fan is engaged all the time and draws less than 10-12 HP but way more than the 2 HP that the clutch fan draws when disengaged

A clutch fan is the most-efficient & -reliable.

Stock clutch setup works the best except if you are going to do water crossings, and that would be the only reason I'd ditch it.

Sounds like the tach itself has gone bad. I have a few spares, but you could just get a whole junkyard cluster for cheap and have other extra gauges yourself.
