Smog Pump

Hi guys, just picked up a 1986 F150 5.8L 2wd P/U. 148,000 original Km's and no rust whatsoever/original shiny paint. The belt for the smog pump was removed and it sounds like the smog pump may squeel thus the reason for no belt. My question is this: Is it benificial for me to get another smog pump and put it back that way it was made? The gas mileage sucks in the truck anyway so it probably won't get much worse. Thanks!

Yes, it'll keep the exhaust from rusting out as fast, and even if you don't have emissions testing now, you probably will eventually - even on something that old. And you probably don't need to replace the pump; just lube it. It might not even need to come off, if you can get to the 2 small vent holes on the back. One is inside the crescent depression, and the other is near the crescent visible in this pic:

Thanks, I will try lubing it up and pick up a belt. I hate having non-functioning emmisions equipment, my dirtbikes foul the air enough!
