1996 302 with two egr codes
OK, what does it mean. The mechanic said if it idles fine, don't worry about it and is probably a clogged passage. What, if anything does that do to the performance? Is this a hose or passage in the intake? Any information will be helpful. Please educate me. Many thanks.

Good question. The mechanic didn't give the numbers - just said it was a couple of egr codes and that when there were "two like that, it usually means a clogged passage". When I asked what I should do, that's when he said if it idles smooth, just drive it. It does have poor torque at highway speed, but it has 237K miles.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went there today and they got only one code with their reader, which was P0401. They printed a list of what might be wrong, but the parts were expensive if I replaced all of them. The zone guy said I should have it put on a computer analyzer, which might narrow the problem, but of course, thats about $120 here just for the hook-up. Maybe my mechanic was right - just drive it.

Your truck has the PFE/DPFE system described in this caption:
That code means the EEC didn't detect enough change in the feedback to think that there was as much exhaust flowing thru the pipe as it wanted. It could be because the pipe is clogged, the valve is stuck, the diaphragm is ruptured, there's no vacuum to the valve, the sensor hoses are leaking/disconnected, or the sensor is bad.

You can "suck test" the EGR valve itself - with it idling, pull the vacuum hose off the valve and connect a long piece of hose to it. Suck on the hose, if the valve is working and the passages are open the idle should drop, get rough, and maybe even stall. If the valve validates, check the vacuum hoses to the DPFE. If you need to replace the DPFE, a Motorcraft part is recommended.

Thanks to all of you for the comments. Things changed today; my trusty Bronco stranded me and I had to have it towed to a dealer that has weekend service. It's getting the analysis and they just called to say the coil failed. Maybe the computer printout will tell me more. They said it should be done Sunday morning.

OK, got the Bronco back. The coil was shot, but so was the computer at the dealer, so I didn't get the full printout of all that might be wrong after all. Darn, and after I got my hopes up. Oh, well, onward and I'll try some of these suggestions next weekend.
Again,,,,,,, Many thanks for all the replies. Some of you guys know a lot more than the mechanics I go to.
