89 f150 302 carb..help!!

im getting ready to trade to a 89 f150 but we cant figure out what is wrong with it. it was the efi 302 but it blew so the boy put a 302 out of a 82 ford that he had but wrecked and he also put the trans out of the 82 in as well..when he did the swap he put the 82 gas tank on the 89..he drove it for a few months no problems and reminder the motor was rebuilt around a year ago or so..but anyway..he drove it no problem until it started acting up..first we thought it was the wires changed then but no..it starts and idles fine but will only take about a quarter throttle and then falls on its face..you can get under the hood and jiggle the throttle 6 or 7 times and open it up and it will..its got a edelbrock carb on it not sure what size..any help and ideas will be much appreciated

Put an EFI back in. The newer, the better.

well at first we thought it was the plug wires cause they was jumping fire..well replaced all them but it still did it..it idles just fine..somebody said something about the carb may need tuned or something about the air to fuel mix or something im not sure..and i noticed it black smoked a lil bit whenever you try to give it gas so far as i know that means its running which..so maybe its got something to do with the carb

What kind of distributor did they put in when the did the swap? that could cause some major problems too. Carbs aren't easier. EFI is, because you can pull codes and it TELLS you whats wrong or at least where to start. this isn't a debate or anything, I just had to get that out.

Sounds like it could be a saturated float in the carb, they can come on slowly. Or even a float level issue.
