nice truck man, did you do anything for offroading besides the lifts? On my 2000 f150 i messed up my coils and spark plugs from hitting some deep puddles/holes and wondering what i would need to do to one of these older engines to avoid the damage

You'd have a hard time ruining one of these trucks like the older ones.
I had mine hood deep in muddy water crap and sucked a good bit into the motor. It started in the middle of the mud hole.. Indestructible.

thats awesome its sad that the 97-03's cant handle that abuse , so i guess putting a snorkle on one of these trucks would just be pointless then? but thanks for the info thats exactly what im looking for

These trucks are tanks without a doubt. I've never seen a snorkel, but if you are going to hit grille deep water on a regular basis you'll need to do something with the intake. The 4.9 and 7.5 intake has a basically ram air deal that sucks air from the middle of the grille.

Go with a 95 5.8 like mine. With these trucks since theyre so old the motors arent as efficient, so u need all that power. my intake runs on top of the grill between hood and grill, and i hit a hole one time and was looking through nothing but water. Water was to my windows for a good 5 seconds. These things WILL NOT get stuck unless you bottom out. If its mud it goes through it. Sand, easy peezy, snow, just plain fun.

Thanks for the info, unfortuntunately im not really being to picky on the engine choice . I am glad to hear that the i6 4.9 and the v8 (80-95 come in both 5.0 and 5.8 correct?) can take a good beating. I didn't no much about the pre 97's even a week ago but learning quick. My next biggest thing was carb vs fuel injector since i see that both are options for these years.. with my 2000 i screwed up my spark plugs and coils from hitting mud and water so i got interested in the pre 97's, along with the fact that i see them on craigslist for a grrand which is very affordable for me and 2, 3 ,4 + grand simply isnt.

so i should aim for the 4.9 i6 or v8 5.8 , fuel injected and think about rerouting the air intake from the grille

Go 5.8 and if you dont want street legal. You can suck serious power from that engine. Ive got my 5.8 and my granpa has a straight six. Ive experienced both. Go 5.8. Please. And just get an aftermarket intake, cheapest one you can find and it will solve the intake problem

im going street legal, will be driving it to the places I off road, is the st8 6 really that poor? never driven a 6 cylinder truck before, been in one tho and it did a cecent job offroading......... any pics of your truck offroading or after you got done? and do you know how the 5.0 is or is the 5.8 so good its all youll swear by?

IM willing to take your word, all I need is an engine that can handle gettin the crap kicked out of it

Ive kicked the crap outta my truck, and baby it a bit afterwards. I work on a farm so it gets used bigtime. My grandpas was just a basic basic 2wd 95 and i grew up working on the farm with it. Now ive got my 95 xlt 4x4 supercab with a 5.8 and im in love. And unfortunately no i dont have many pics. And theyre only on my facebook profile. I havent tried to beat the crap out of it on purpose. Just a few circumstances when i did on accident. And since we do trails not many pic chances. And i usually just do a quick run by myself sometimes through the mud. When i hit that hole i was by myself. There were some people on a 4 wheeler nearby clapping though. And i just recently had to go pull a friend out that bottomed out so bad none if his wheels were touching. I pulled right in and dragged him out in 2wd. I had a friend with a basic 2wd 5.0 and he went some places he shouldnt have been with us 4x4 guys. But i would forget the 6, and try for the 5.8. But if its all u got. Snag a 5.0. Youll want all the power yiu can get.

I see where your coming from, I hope to go v8, and id love to get another extended cab, but since this truck wont be my dd ill probly end up with a regular cab with anything under the hood just so I can start really offroading again and not worrying abouyt breaking my dd, it will be a nice feeling

the 4.9 has some torque to it, but i would rather have the power of the 5.8 for mudding to keep the rpm's up.

Id go reg cab short bed if you can find it. More fun and you can get into tighter places. And it weighs less so you can go about anywhere. Like i said before. These trucks refuse to get stuck. One of my teachers was talking about his old old f250 with 10 inches of lift and a 5.8 v8 and his exact words are, " if i could strap that to a telephone pole it would climb it. These things are tanks.
