94 5.0 oilpan gasket?

i have a 94 302 5.0 w/auto trans
i need a new oil pan gasket and i was told it would cost $510 to do, this seems really high . so i looked up in my repair manual how to do this and it looks like it would be tough w/o the truck being on a lift.
has anyone else ran into this and have you done it your self or had a mech. do it.
thanks, warriordad

Yes, many people have had their leaking 5.0L oil pan gaskets replaced.

Doing it on a lift is the most-difficult way. It's much easier to just lift the engine out and swap the gasket. While it's out, inspect the freeze plugs, engine mounts, and consider replacing the oil pump just because it's easy & cheap (but don't buy the cheapest one you can find). In any case, remove & clean the oil pump pickup tube. Also, check for exhaust manifold leaks. Read these captions:

would that be same approach for a 4.9 straight 6. I have been told I need to raise the motor a few inches to get pan out.

No, an I6 doesn't require as much work. Yes, lifting an I6 is enough to get the pan out.
