I6 cooling fan after motors off

My 88 Bronco with a I6 has the small fan that turns on when the motor turns off. I cannot find the right name for it, and mine doesn't turn on anymore. Anyone know what I am talking about?

Yes I know what you're talking about. I have an '88 F-150 with the 6 cylinder. Mine only turns on at certain times and without rhyme or reason, usually in hotter weather. Are you having hot start problems because yours isn't turning on?

Yes, sometimes it does. And before replacing the starter, I would like to make sure that is working again.

I can't tell you anything about fixing it. Steve83 may come to your rescue.

I know that some I6s have an extra fan to help cool the injectors\fuel rail due to a hot start problem. Could these be the fan you are talking about? IIRC some I6s have the fan, but ALL I6s have a least a heatshield. lemme see if i can find more info....

Edit: Credit goes to Steve83, and the search button

That is the fan, I cannot see Steve83's image you posted because of the firewall at work. Does it say the correct name?
Thanks booba, what search term did you use to find that?

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/5...ctorblower.jpg
with this caption: Injector Blower used on '87-89 4.9L only. There's a small sensor clipped to the fuel rail that triggers a module attached to the core support which controls the blower.

If you still can't see the pics lemme know and I'll upload them to my photobucket and repost.

Thanks again Booba,
However photobucket as well as supermotors is blocked by the firewall here. I am going to go check out sensor and module to see if there is any visible damage.

The fan isn't the most likely problem - the module that controls it holds water & rusts inside. It's attached to the core support, and is about the size of a folded cell phone. Follow the blower wires to it.

Does the control module have a relay in it? If so, I wonder if he could just switch out the relay.

I followed the wires and found a black box about that size but its on the inner fender right next to the starter relay. I did not see anything on the core support but I do see the wire harness. Where on the core support, near the top / bottom, driver side / passenger side?
