4x4 Clunking

I have a 1990 f-150 4x4, when i put it 4 wheel and lock the hubs there is a clunking noise near the front wheels mostly on driver side, but sometimes the other side when going slow, if I speed up it wont do it anymore, i checked the radius arm bushings and there is no play in them, and the wheel bearings look to be ok as well, any ideas?

How long have you had the truck? Manual or auto hub locks? How long since the wheel bearings were packed & adjusted? Click my black Bronco in my signature & read the captions in the Brakes & Hubs album.

Wow, thanks for that info! adjusted the bearings and that noise went away enough to hear another clunking, lol. Manual hubs, and just got the truck, it has 150K and runs perfectly. Very strong motor. I think the other problem is a noise that feels like something is moving forward when i stop and backward when i accelerate. Doesnt make sense to me but ithink it may be the u-joints on the 4x4 drive shaft?

"That noise" went away??? What noise? That's your first post. Or are you (coyotetrail) also Daniel Zink?

U-joints generally chirp & shake the whole truck based on wheel speed. Not many people describe it as a clunk.

Check your spare tire & under the seats.
