Question heater problems

I have a 86 f150 xlt lariat shortbox with a 302. my problem is a while ago my
2nd speed up on the fan switch quit working but the other 3 worked just fine. i thought thats no big deal but all of a sudden low and med-high quit working to. high still works but none of the rest. when it did this smoke started rolling out of the heater vents and smelled like burning leaves. it's getting colder out now and i need this fixed. i've checked the fuses and tore the whole dash of and can't find any wires burnt. i thought that the heater got the air from out side the cab so i can't explain the smoke anybody else have any suggestions? the heater core is clean and nothin is obstrructing air flow. any help with be greatly appreciated.

there is a fan speed resistor that actually controls the speed. it is bolted to the side of the air box close to the blower. when you pull it out it has three coils that sits in the air box. the resistor is on that piece too. that is wht you had burning.
