1993 Ford F150 problem

I was going to eat last night when the starngest thing happened to me. I went to put the truck in reverse and the gear slector broke!!! How in the hell does that happen? I have owned 3 older models F150s and never had that happen. I am going to take it apart now, and will post what I find. If anyone has any advise, it would be greatly appreciated.

It's a known problem. Click the tan CV in my signature & look thru the Steering Column album. The exploded diagram's caption mentions the parts that break. Ford sells revised versions.
