Engine build suggestions

I need to overhaul and engine for school and want to have some fun with it too.

I've got a 95 MAF 5.0L. The ECU, the whole harness and the engine.
I'd like to make 300+hp when its done.

My plans so far are:
GT40(maybe P if I can find headers for em) Heads
Long Tube headers
3 inch y pipe
Hi Flow Cat(s)
Cam(dunno on specs, any advice would be great)
Higher power coil/timing bump
5.0HO or aftermarket injectors(maybe...think they'd help?)

The trucks already got a 3inch cat-back, electric cooling fan, "custom" intake.

How close do you thing I'd be with my current plans? What else would you suggest I do?

Would I see any improvements swapping to a 5.0 Explorer Intake/TB? If I end up getting the P heads, I would need to take the whole Explorer motor so I'd get them for free basically.

Here was my plan for building a 302:

-New short block
-Roller timing set. Cloyes is a good choice.
-Choice of cam. Stock mustang works good. Just dont go above 114* LSA
-GT40 Heads. Stay away from the "P" heads if you can.
-MSD ingition. cap/rotor/coil. Autolite plugs gapped to 0.044
-STOCK intakes. The 302 intakes are just fine stock. 351 is where aftermarket intakes benefit.
-BBK 56MM Throttle body.
-STOCK intake, insulated. Choice of drop in filter with a 460/300 intake tube.
-BBK Ceramic shorty headers. I would stay with shorties if I were you.
-Bassani high flow y-pipe with cat.
-Choice of muffler and SINGLE 3" exhuast.

Thats a good plan for a solid 302. SHould get you above your 300 HP goal.

For a cam, look at the Crane 2020 with stock heads and the Crane 2030 with GT-40 or equivalent heads

---The ones i was looking at say 112*
-GT40 Heads. Stay away from the "P" heads if you can.
---I'm going to make this decision when my headers get here, see how things look because from what i've seen the main problem is melting plug wires/boots
-MSD ingition. cap/rotor/coil. Autolite plugs gapped to 0.044
---
-STOCK intakes. The 302 intakes are just fine stock. 351 is where aftermarket intakes benefit.
---noted for upcoming 351 build
-BBK 56MM Throttle body.
---Would this be better than the explorer(or a mustang) upper intake and a 75-80mm TB?
-STOCK intake, insulated. Choice of drop in filter with a 460/300 intake tube.
-BBK Ceramic shorty headers. I would stay with shorties if I were you.

Was looking this afternoon and found the Ford Racing Z303 Looks pretty similar.

Thanks to you both for your input

Ron

PS A few people I mentioned this build to have suggested i put roller/roller-tip rockers in, would it really be worth the $$$?

Crane grinds all of Ford Racing's cams. The Crane 2030 is smog-legal, AFAIK the Ford Z is not. The 2030 has WAY less duration (216/220° vs. 228°) and makes its power at much lower RPM. It also has a skosh less lift. The 2030 makes good torque from 2500 up with a HP peak around 5000. Ford says the Z peaks at 6500. How high do you want to rev?

Roller rockers don't add a lot of HP but they are a good idea on any high lift cam since they reduce the side loading on the valves and increase the service life of the guides

shorty headers have been dyno proven that they dont give any extra power. long tubes have been proven to give a good amount of power.

Shorty headers are worlds better than the stock strangler manifolds. They produce very nearly the same peak HP as long tubes but they do not produce any of `the gains in midrange torque that long tubes do.

The biggest advantages of shorties are that they bolt up with no additional fab required and many come certified smog-legal.

Are you serious with this post? I would like to see the dyno results of the test you speak of.

I intend to fab up(read: cut, fit and have an exhaust shop weld) a y-pipe and cat combo anyway

What I'm thinking is:
2.5 inch collector headers
to 2.5 pipe (angles etc. to get the y-pipe/cat to the factory location)
into a Flowmaster y-pipe dual (2.5 to 3)
into a 3 inch cat
into the 3 inch exhaust already on the truck.
