Catalytic Converter Heat Shield

Hey all,

There was a clanging coming out from the bottom of my 92 F-150 Custom and I peaked underneath to see that half the heat shield (if that's what the metal plates are that are bolted to the outside of the second catalytic converter) was extremely loose. The corners broke free of their bolts and only one corner was left on, so I just pulled it off. If that is a heat shield, and it's not on the converter (side of the converter facing the tranny), will it produce enough heat to do damage to the transmission (the transmission is automatic and the transmission case is right next to the cat converter) and if not, is it something that's terribly important to replace and how expensive is it. I'm a college student without a whole lot of money, I'll get around to replacing it, but if it's not too important I've got other things like rent and stuff that are more important to take care of right now. Thanks.

Heat is the enemy of the E4OD. Should be pretty simple to have it rebolted/welded back on.

you probably can take it to a muffler shop, and just have them reclamp the heat sheild, and maybe tack weld (spot weld) it in place on a few spots on the sheild.

I personally wouldnt risk running it for extended periods where heat builds up more.

Edit: Grrr adrian beating me to first post, by a matter of seconds...

So I took it into Midas today to see if they could weld it back on. They took it back to look at it, came back out and said they welded it back on, handed me my keys back, and said Merry Christmas. They welded it back on for free.
