gas mileage

i made a trip to texas last weekend and figured up that i am getting about 12.5 MPG.....this is in my 96 supercab w/302 auto 140k...3:55 gear

is that about right for this truck?

i just did the normal tuneup stuff about a month ago
i am also noticing that the truck likes to ping alot...even under light load
i thought my old spark plugs and wires were the problem but it is still happening....what should the timing be at on these trucks?
also when setting the timing do you do it just like a 5.0 mustang where you pull the spout connector out?

Well I'm not gonna be your best bet, but since nobody else has answered your post, I'll give it a shot.

Your mileage isn't great, but it might not be that bad. My truck has an I-6 with a 5-spd and 2.73 rear and it gets around 15-16.

The truck shouldn't be pinging at all, so the timing is a good place to start. If it's at all like my GM experience, you've got to disconnect any computer controls from the distributor first.

I'm new here, but I have a '89 f150, 302/aod, unknown rear end, and I get about 13.4mpg all the time. It doesn't seem to matter whether it is in town or on the hiway, 13.4. It makes me jealous when I hear of smaller engines getting better mileage, and making more power at the same time. sometimes a lot more power.

It's torque that matters in trucks, not raw horsepower. Look at the specs for those "import" engines that have tons of HP in little space, but have next to nothing for torque. Wonder why foreign sports cars don't come with trailer hitches?

With my I-6 and a standard, with the 3.08 rear end, I can get about 15 pretty consistently. If it's lots of highway driving on flat road, I might see 17-18. Doesn't really matter if I baby the gas all the time or floor it constantly.

IIRC, my '89 is set to 11 BTDC with spout pulled.

i have a 94 f150 with 302 and i usually get around 13 or 14 miles but i usually stay off the highway cause i dont really go places that are so far that i need the highway to get there quicker so im not really sure about the mileage on there but it usually doesnt matter how much pedal i use i still get about the same mileage if i floor it or granny cruise

My '94 F-150, 5speed manual and the 302 gets 16-18 on the highway, cruising at 65-70 with the cruise set. Thats totally unloaded, with a campershell on it. The campershell added at least 2 mpg

Loaded down, with a trailer in tow, Ive gotten as bad as 6mpg. And it didnt like any bit of that trip.

MUCH more of a highway travel rig than a tow rig.

Thats why I picked up a 250 powerstroke and am selling the 150. Just not enough *****.
