Cool Automatic Tranny Hard Shift

Hello Fellas,

I have a 1993 F150 with an E40D tranny. The tranny shifts hard from 1st to 2nd and into 3rd. If I let off the throttle just before it shifts its smooth. Any thoughts other then to keep letting off the throttle? Maybe the valve body or something?

Thanks for the help guys. jrpotts01

I have 149,000 on mine. I have read other forums and people have said it was a bad 1-2 shift accumulator spring in the throttle body. Some people say it is the sensor on the side of the tranny. I don't want to spend a lot of money guessing. Thanks for reading. jrpotts01

I have 118,000 on my 1990 F150 and it does the same thing from 3rd to 4th. I just let off the gas at 35mph and it's good to go. I too don't want to spend a lot of money guessing.

Thanks for the reply.
Have any Idea about what is causing it? I don't think mine would cause any major problems, I just like to have things correct. I have ordered some tech manuals, when they come in i'll see if I can come up with anything. I'll let you know if I find anything out.

Had the same thing happen to me when I bought my truck. I took it to a tranny shop and the pulled it and the torque converter was sitting funny in it and was grinding on one side.

that might be your problem

Wish mine would just go away. I'm thinking about buying a shift kit, not just the replacement plate kind. This one comes with new springs for the accumulatore and says it corrects harsh 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. only $89 on E-bay. Sure beats buying a new tranny.

When I still had my 93 it did the same thing. It wasn't long after it started that I had to do a total rebuild.

Anybody out there?

Hello,
You guys all have pre-1997 F150's and nobody has any idea about whats up with these transmissions? Whats the point of having a forum if nobody is going to help each other out? I am stationed in Korea and don't have much time to get the truck fixed when I get back to Alabama in 4 months. I could use your help, I don't have time to troubleshoot before I move to Florida. Thanks if there is anyone out there with knowledge about an E40D. jrpotts01

Hard Shift - overdrive switch

My ford's overdrive switch started flashing and I replaced it and things seem to be all better!

From listening to the old timers that I know they do agree that a slight jolt in the shifting is what they remember to be normal. I was experiencing things that were not normal on top of a hard shift, though. It was getting progressively worst as well! It got so bad that it was scary to drive far.

Symptoms
The truck would be going 55 mph at 1200 RMP and all of a sudden jump up to 1300. (out of my control)
2nd to 3rd wouldn't fail too hard shift. It became a violent occurrence.

Measures I took
replaced vehicle speed sensor. the one that goes in the differential. (didn't change anything. I read that one on a form)
Replaced Overdrive switch that's located on the gear shift.
it's been a week and it's a relief. (I'm going to replace the other vehicle speed sensor that hooks into the trani because there still sometimes is a minor jump in the shift. but it feels strong. I'm not worried about it since I replaced that overdrive switch I bought at the dealership.)
