bad clutch?

i got a 93 150 300 5spd 4x4

i was offroading over the weekend and at the end of my trip the clutch pedal got soft and would engage a few inches from the floor, but shift fine. on the way home i could feel it get softer and it shifted a little rough. next day going to work got harder and harder to shift. on the way home i had no clutch pedal left and limped home in 2nd gear for 15 miles. before having this happen i could not feel the clutch slipping at all.

is my clutch dead or is it somethin with the hydraulics? i checked the fluid and it was at normal level. anyone know

thanks for the help

Sorry I missed this. Sounds like a classic bad slave cylinder.

If you're real lucky it's the master cylinder; otherwise it's the slave which is an incredibly STUPID design and a royal pain in the **** to change. You have to pull the tranny to get at it.

Check you fluid level. If it's down, you have in external leak. Find it and replace parts as req'd. If it's not down, you are bypassing internally and therefore screwed. The Ford shop manual doesn't even show a good way of testing for which cylinder has bought the farm. As much a I hate throwing expensive parts at the problem in hopes of being right, I'd almost say change the master and hope, except that it's the slave that usually goes.

Sorry, I really can't offer any positive advice

I changed my clutch 6 years ago, never had a prob until last year. there is a leak and im suspecting the f'n slave cylinder. u can tell when it is low on fluid by the way it shifts. I keep a can of brake fluid in the truck at all times and top off when needed. then again maybe thats why I keep a milk crate with all the other fluids as well in there too. (ol betsy runs great but she is a leaker)

yeah i was leaning towards it being the slave, and to replace that you have to take the tranny out?? if im having this done, is it worth it to replace/upgrade the clutch while its all out? the truck has 115k miles on it, so it maybe getting close. the clutch feels great though.. what do you guys think? thanks.

Well, unless you like to pull your driveshafts, xfer case, and tranny a lot, I would do the clutch too. Went with a centerforce on my 92, and will be doing the same for the 97. (a lot harder on the 97+s too )

which centerforce clutch did you go with and hows it workin out for you?

i called the local ford dealership and they gave me a rough estimate of $1500 for a new clutch and slave cylinder. thats with parts and labor. still waiting on local shop to get an estimate from them.

It is not a technical job, just laborious as hell. a lot of nuts and bolts to remove. but if it your first time, I highly recommend having a good shop manual nearby

Since only a 150, you have the "light duty" Mazda M5OD-R2. The bigger trucks came with a "heavy duty" Zf-5.

Drop the tranny and see what you've got.
Trust me this isn't a one day job.
You can tear it down and have time to see what you've got and to figure out what to do to fix it.

You never did say are you losing fluid or not?
