Question 1992 f150 towing capacity - please help

i'm getting a run around from the local dealers and the best ford could do is to promise me that they'll mail me a towing guide which contains a formula to figure out a towing capacity...
anyway, it's a 1992 f150, straight 6, 5 speed manual. can someone help? and i'm not looking for capacity on the bumper hitch but on a regular hitch (whatever you call them, a class 2).
thanks in advance!

Well i have a 92 with 5.8, E4OD, 3.55 gears with Class 3 hitch and pulled our old 26ft Sunline camper no problem. I think my truck is rate about 6500. With the 6, and a 5 speed i say about 4000, not knowing the gears in it. What do you plan to towing really helps too

With the 5 speed, it's actually around 2500# depending on axle ratio.

It's because of the Mazdog tranny, nothing to do with what hitch you run, although your bumper may not be rated even that high.

The Mazda M5OD tranny is only a "light duty" and gets a tough rap. However, we swapped a 300/m5od into a 88 F350 with a blown 351 once, and that was our tower of a 5 ton equipment trailer. Ran for four years trouble free till the truck was wrecked.

Thumbs up

Many 300/M5s I've seen have 2.73:1 axles as the OD is ~0.79:1... so they tach up decently high on the freeway and 1st gear is pretty low to have a decent launch with around what 3.70:1 1st?

If you need to pull more I don't see why you couldn't pull something in 4th...

i need to tow a horse trailer w/ at least one horse in it. glad i looked into this before i comitted myself to a steel trailer that weighs 3000 lbs empty.

I can guarantee you that is wrong. The actual numbers depend on which rear gears you have, but the absolute most you could hope for, according to Ford, is 3600 lbs. fully loaded. The maximum loaded trailer weights are as follows:

For a '92 Regular Cab 300ci / 5 speed w/ a rear gear ratio of:
2.73: 2100 lbs.
3.08: 2300 lbs.
3.31: 2900 lbs.
3.55: 3600 lbs.

For a '92 Super Cab 300ci / 5 speed w/ a rear gear ratio of:
3.08: 2000 lbs.
3.31: 2700 lbs.
3.55: 3400 lbs.

Again, those weights include the weight of the trailer itself, as well as the load.

If your trailer weighed 3000 lbs. empty, the most you would be able to add is 600 lbs., and even then only if you have 3.55 rear gears and your truck has a regular cab. This according to Ford.
