how can i prove that my 78 for is noncatalyst?
I know that my 78 f150 is non catalyst. The sticker under the hood is missing, but the guy I bought the truck from gave me a picture of the sticker that says that it is non catalyst. How can I prove that the picture is the sticker that was in my truck for inspection purposes. I tried running a vehicle history report, but because it was made in 78 there is not enough numbers in the VIN to run the report. What can I do?

1975 - 1995 vehicles will get a gas cap test and have a visual inspection to make sure the factory emision equipment in still on.
I thought a 78 f150 had a smog pump?
Here is a link what may help.

It's very probable that a 1978 truck is non-catalyst.
Passenger cars and trucks had different requirements. Trucks were not under the same restrictions as a car for cats because of the nature of the vehicle. If memory serves, cats weren't required in trucks until 80 or 81, which is where all vehicles were mandated to have cats and other crap.
As far as documenting it, good luck. You should try Ford's customer service. The regulating agencies from state to state have various access to those records, but getting them to move on it would be like pulling teeth.
I used to work at Enviro-Test in Denver, and it seemed like their goal was to eliminate any vehicle older then 1981. That inspection to find all five elements of the smog system was what failed most cars I tested. (I actually got the job so I could learn how to get my Bronco to pass. Nuff said bout that tho.)
I guess what I'm saying is you need that sticker. It's what the tester goes by, and without it, it's usually an automatic fail.

Trucks with a GVW over I believe 6000lbs were not required to meet the same standards as cars until 1979. I had a 78 with no cat. In 79 the weight was changed to something like 10000lbs. 79 F150s had the converter. This was all mandated by federal law. You should only need the door tag with the GVW to prove you do not need a cat.

For those who were confused by this, it used to be only a few counties that had emissions checks.

Did you see if you can still get the sticker from Ford Parts?
If not try this guy: http://www.dennis-carpenter.com/trucks.php
On page 116 of his online catalog for 73-79 trucks, he has reproduction emission stickers listed for 1978's, but only for certain engines. You might even try contacting him if yours is not listed to see if he still might have it.

problem solved
I went to a junk yard, found a 78 Bronco, took the valve cover with the sticker ($15) , brought it home, cleaned it up, painted it and, switched it with mine. Problem solved...no questions asked! Passed inspection. It's still stupid. I think all 70's model ford trucks that are 4 wheel drive and have a V8 are non catalytic. It's only 2wd and maybe the 6cyl.
