fuel pressure 0psi with key on 89 f150

ok, checked the pressure on the rail with everything off, reading 0 psi, had wife turn key on still reads 0 psi. She fires her up and it jumps straight to about 55-60 psi then levels back out to 45 psi at idle. Soon as she shuts the truck off, it drops back to 0 psi in less than 3 secs, maybe faster.....

Does this mean my fuel pump/ pumps are bad? even though it runs?

Never have heard the fuel pump hum or anything since I have bought it in 94....

Either the pump is bad, or the line in the tank is cracked. Either way, you need to get into the tank to fix it.

The high pressure pump is the one on the frame.

It sounds like the fuel pressure regulator is letting all the pressure back into the return lines, or a check valve in the high pressure pump. I do this pinch off the return line and see if pressure holds steady.

ok, replaced the fuel pressure regulator Friday, and all is well again. the pressure when idleing is at 35 psi and after shutting down, it holds pressure for a bit, havent tested how long but I know if held for over an hour..

Thanks guys! Feels great to get on her again and not see smoke from the driver side exhaust. power is back and no more stumbling and surging.....

You forgot to mention that smoke was coming out of the exhaust in your first post.

For some reason, I was thinking you had a 300, which would have meant your pressure was low, if anything, but realizing now that you have a 302, your pressure was high. I should have caught that. My bad. I'm glad you didn't go to the trouble of checking the in tank pump!

sorry, that must of been in the post i had in the engines section on top of forums.
No problem mate, thanks for the input as I to was glad I didnt have to drop the tank.
By the way, what size tank do these come with? finally put over 16 gallons in it this weekend, but hand had been on empty for a while (thought I was going to have to drop her, wanted it empty)?

Was told they are all 19 gallon tanks on the short wheel base, if so, may still have to drop her if the sending unit is out of calibration......any input?
